After India beat England in the T20 World Cup semifinal, Dinesh Karthik spoke for a billion Indians when he sent this emotional message to Team India. This was a moment that resonated even more with Karthik because he saw India suffer on the opposite side of it two years ago when they were demolished by England in Adelaide.
England had completely chased down a 169-run target in just 16 overs that day, with the openers registering an unbeaten stand of over 100. But the loss was a bitter disappointment for an outfit regarded as one of the tournament favorites.
India’s Incredible Turnaround
To the present day, India has achieved what even that could not by qualifying for the finals of the T20 World Cup over England. This was a true display of some hard work and dedication by the team after facing almost everything that could have happened in opposition to getting here.
Dinesh Karthik walked into the Indian dressing room and said a few words of praise for their incredible turnaround. He said:
Two years ago, I played the same game against the same opponents. I remember sitting with him in the locker room.
Adelaide, it was a cold night. Fast forward to where we are right now, and it just feels really cool to see that come about even though it didn’t go our way. A whole hell of a lot of good decisions made. Team selection was the genesis. It is refreshing to see how well you have played.
Appreciated To Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid
Karthik, who had earlier bid for all forms of cricket in September, announced his retirement and praised captain Rohit Sharma as well as head coach Rahul Dravid. Rohit, after the loss in Adelaide, had promised to do things differently.
India, which has failed to win an ICC title since the 2013 triumph under MS Dhoni’s leadership, had desperately waited for major silverware. Rohit Sharma grabbed the team by their scruff and introduced a new brand of cricket to be played more modernly.
Rohit is the captain, so fair enough, but equally, credit goes to Rahul Dravid (Karthik was there in 2007), who had reached the final of various tournaments several times but failed to win one for a long time himself as well. Karthik wished Dravid had exited like Gary Kirsten, who ended his term as India’s coach by winning the 2011 World Cup. The wicketkeeper added:
Just a couple of mentions. Rohit Sharma, for sure; captained the team brilliantly, as did Rahul Bhai. You could play your last game in just one more day. It was a good journey; it’s also leaving the team in a better place for others to take over, Karthik added.
Looking Ahead To Final
When India readies itself for the final of the T20 World Cup. They are on the cusp of making history. It is that tale of the heartbreak in Adelaide to their semi-final win over England, a journey filled with fightback, a tactical switch, and captaincy mentoring an English play, if you will!
The team’s journey under captain Rohit Sharma starts on a long-overdue note, and it is something that will make you proud of their hard work, which has come to fruition. Heading into the last game, India strives to break their ICC glass ceiling due to a silver lining and enter what looks like new arrivals of Indian cricket dominance.
