The Yankees lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 and are now 3-1. The game started off well enough as Will Warren and Corbin Burns matched zeros for the first 3 innings, but it fell apart for the starters as they tired at this early point in the season. Also, once the bullpens, took over things got worse for the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees bullpen blew the lead in the eighth inning as the Yankees relievers gave up 5 runs. The Diamondbacks have scored the most runs in baseball. Do you think the Yankees bullpen is good enough for them to win the American League pennant?
Lineups For the Game
For the season’s third game, the Diamondbacks batted first again at Yankee Stadium. They had Corbin Carroll batting first and played right field. Ketel Marte batted second and played second base. Pavin Smith was the designated hitter batting third. Josh Naylor played first base and batted fourth. He is a historic Yankee killer. Eugenio Suárez was playing right field and batting fifth for the Diamondbacks.
Gabriel Moreno did the catching, batting six. Jake McCarthy played left field and batted seventh. Alek Thomas was playing center field and batting eighth. He moved from left to center field in the eighth inning. Lourdes Gurriel Jr entered the game in the eighth inning for defensive purposes. Geraldo Perdomo was the shortstop and rounded out the Arizona batting order.
The Yankees lineup had Paul Goldschmidt batting first and playing first base; he seemed to like the leadoff spot. Cody Bellinger batted second and started in center field. He moved to left field in the seventh inning. Aaron Judge batted third and played right field. Jazz Chisolm Jr. batted fourth and played second base. Anthony Volpe batted fifth and played shortstop. Austin Wells played catcher and batted sixth.
Jasson Dominguez started in left field, batting seventh, but was removed in the seventh inning. Dominguez was the designated hitter batting seventh. He was replaced by Trent Grisham in the seventh inning, Grisham played center field and moved Bellinger to left field. Ben Rice was the designated hitter, batting eighth. Orlando Cabera batted ninth and played third base. The Yankees used this starting lineup in the last game. The Yankees made the same defensive substitutions they did in the last game; we will likely we will see that every game they are ahead.
Scoring Summary: Yanks Against Diamondbacks
Carroll hit a 2-run home run to give the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning.
Dominguez then hit a home run for the Yankees in the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Volpe hit a solo home run in the fourth inning tying the game at 2. At this point, the Yankees have more home runs than singles.
The Yankees grabbed a 4-2 lead in the fourth as well. 2 runs scored on an error by first baseman Naylor.
Perdomo drove in Randall Grischuk in the eighth inning and the Yankees led to 4-3.
Suárez then hit his fifth home run of the year, the most in major league baseball, a grand slam to give the Diamondbacks a 7-4 lead.
Ben Rice hit a solo home run for the Yankees in the ninth inning to produce the final score of 7-5.
Notes From the Game
Will Warren took advantage of his opportunity to start, because of the Yankees starting pitching injuries. He pitched 5 innings (more than the 4 2/3 the last two Yankee starters threw), pitched to contact, only striking out 4, he walked 4 guys, gave up 1 hit (it was a home run), and allowed 2 runs.
Burns started his first game of the year for the Diamondbacks. He pitched four and a third innings and was relieved by Jalen Beeks.
At the start of the game, it was only 50 degrees with 10 MPH winds. It was good pitching weather tonight.
Old Friend Adam Ottavino is Back
The Yankees placed closer Devin Williams on the paternity list and in a corresponding move signed former Yankee Adan Ottavino. The 39-year-old pitched for the New York Mets the last three years. It is concerning that his earned run average rose in each of those three years. He may be done and may not get into a game for the Yankees this time around.
Conclusion
The Diamondbacks are a good team and their starting pitcher, Corbin Burns, is a great one and a noted Yankee killer. So, this was likely going to be a loss for the Yankees even before the game started. It was too bad the bullpen blew up in the eighth inning and cost Will Warren his first major league win.
