Detroit Tigers Bomb Chicago Cubs As Youth Rule 8-2

Dillon Dingler, Detroit Tigers

For the majority of the 2024 season, the Detroit Tigers have played a blend of boring, uninspired baseball. While their pitching has been solid for the most part, their offense has underachieved. But the Tigers delivered on Wednesday night, scoring an 8-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Detroit has slogged along offensively with a bunch of veterans on one-year deals. They appear to be blocking the paths of the club’s future stars.

Things have been different since the trade deadline. The Detroit Tigers moved on from Carson Kelly, Gio Urshela and Mark Canha. It opened up opportunities for Dillon Dingler, Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney to be promoted from Triple-A Toledo.

Detroit also brought back slumping slugger Spencer Torkelson from Toledo. The Tigers are now on a full-on youth movement at the plate. Seven of the Tigers’ nine starting lineup regulars are 25 years old or younger. Only Matt Vierling and Kerry Carpenter are 27 years old.

The MLB’s youngest lineup has been playing an exciting brand of baseball as of late. Detroit has won seven of its last nine games, going to 62-65. It would take something extremely magical for the Tigers to make a run at an American League Wild Card spot. Just because they might not make postseason play doesn’t mean the Detroit Tigers can’t be fun to watch over the season’s final six weeks.

On Wednesday night. Trey Sweeney slammed his first big-league home run – a 417-foot (102.8-mph exit velocity), two-run blast off Chicago starter Jameson Taillon in the second inning. Then, Riley Greene walloped a 422-foot (112.0-mph EV) two-run shot to give the Detroit Tigers a 4-0 advantage.

Beau Brieske opened for the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday and fired a pair of scoreless innings. He turned the ball over to bulk-innings reliever Brant Hurter. Hurter surrendered a pair of runs on three hits while striking out four in 3 2/3 innings of work. He earned his first MLB career victory.

Chicago’s Christian Bethancourt slugged a two-run homer in the fifth inning to make it 4-2. But the Detroit Tigers tacked on four insurance runs in the ninth inning. Carpenter’s three-run homer helped Detroit pad their lead right there. Since returning from the injured list on August 13, Carpenter has hit .250 (7-for-28) with four homers and eight RBIs through his first seven ballgames.

The Tigers faced Chicago on Thursday, losing 10-2.
