Detroit Tigers Complete Sweep of White Sox with 6-3 Win

Tigers

The suddenly red-hot Detroit Tigers completed their four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox on Monday night with a come-from-behind 6-3 victory at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.

The victory pulls the Tigers back to the .500 mark at 66-66. It marks the first time since the 2016 season that the Tigers have hit the .500 mark at any point after the All-Star break. After seven years of misery, it appears that the rebuild is finally beginning to take shape.

Young Bats Lead the Way

Once again it was the Tigers’ young core of offensive starts that led the way in Tuesday night’s victory. After squandering several early chances and stranding five runners on base through the first four innings, the Tigers finally broke through against White Sox’ right-hander Davis Martin as Colt Keith smacked a two-out RBI single into left in the fifth inning that trimmed their deficit to one run at 2-1.

That’s how the score would remain until the seventh inning where Parker Meadows clobbered a 3-2 fastball from Jared Shuster for a 415-foot (108.4-mph EV) game-tying solo home run. Four batters later, rookie third baseman Jace Jung dropped a go-ahead RBI single into left field to give the Tigers their first lead in the ballgame.

Spencer Torkelson followed by greeting new reliever Justin Anderson with a mammoth 439-foot (108.8-mph EV) three-run blast off of the batter’s eye in center field that increased the Tigers’ advantage to 6-2. Talk about celebrating your 25th birthday in style.

Ty Madden Impresses in MLB Debut

Before Monday’s game, the Tigers promoted right-hander Ty Madden from Triple-A Toledo to make his first big-league start. The former first-round pick had struggled badly in 18 starts at the Triple-A level, but you wouldn’t have known it based on his performance against the White Sox. Madden did struggle with his command, issuing three free passes and throwing only 52 of his 87 pitches for strikes. He was still able to limit the White Sox to just two runs on four hits over his five frames though while recording a pair of strikeouts.

After generating whiffs at an elite level in the minor leagues, Madden was only able to induce eight swings and misses on 87 pitches on the night, posting an underwhelming CSW (called strikes + whiffs) of just 20 percent. His fastball velocity averaged 93.7 mph in the start and touched as high as 96.0 mph while he also mixed in a slider, cutter, changeup, and curve ball.

With Casey Mize tentatively set to rejoin the Tigers’ rotation over the weekend, it’ll be interesting to see what they do with Madden going forward.

News and Notes

Before Monday’s game, left-hander Bryan Sammons was optioned to Triple-A Toledo. Sammons was likely going to be squeezed out of the team’s starting rotation by the impending return of Casey Mize (hamstring) over the weekend.

It’s still an extremely long shot, but the Tigers now sit just 6.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot in the American League. To get there, they would have to leap past the Mariners and Red Sox — who are 5.5 and 5.0 games back themselves – before catching the Twins. Sean Guenther picked up his first MLB victory on Monday night, working 1 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball against the White Sox. Javier Baez (hip) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Monday, officially ending his 2024 season.
