This recipe is what has led to the Detroit Tigers being in playoff position with a week remaining in the 2024 regular season. Detroit is aiming to make the MLB Playoffs for the first time since 2014. Detroit(82-74) is tied with the Kansas City Royals for the second American League Wild Card spot. Kansas City holds the tiebreaker due to a 7-4 record this season against the Detroit Tigers. Even though Detroit currently occupies the third wild card spot, their playoff chances are the worst amongst the two teams they are competing with according to FanGraphs. Detroit has a 61.3% chance to qualify while KC has a 63% chance and the Minnesota Twins have a 65% chance to make the playoffs. Detroit’s offense has been poor this season. They are 24th in batting average, 24th in home runs, and 18th in runs scored.
Their offense is paced by Left Fielder Riley Greene. He leads the ballclub in batting average, home runs, and RBI. The pitching staff of the Detroit Tigers has been the stronger part of their team this season. They are third in ERA, sixth in opposing batting average, and second in WHIP. The pitching staff is led by Starting Pitcher Tarik Skubal who is the prohibitive favorite to win the 2024 AL Cy Young Award. He is second in the league in wins, ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP.
Detroit’s Upcoming Schedule
The Detroit Tigers have only six games standing between them and the 2024 MLB Playoffs. They have a day off tomorrow before hosting the Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game set beginning on Tuesday. Detroit finishes the regular season with three games at home against the hapless Chicago White Sox. Detroit was predicted to be one of the league’s worst teams entering the season, but still have their work cut out for them.
They must play well over their final six games to ensure the late-season surge does not result in the Detroit Tigers being left out of the postseason. The Twins finish the season against the Miami Marlins and Baltimore Orioles while the Royals finish with a six-game road trip against the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves.
