Detroit Tigers Starting Pitcher Tarik Skubal’s first 20 starts this season have him on a list with three of the best pitchers in franchise history. His 2.34 ERA is the fourth-best in the illustrious history of the Tigers franchise. He is trailing only Justin Verlander(2011), Mark Fidrych(1975), and David Price(2015) for the best ERA through their first 20 starts of a season in team history. Verlander would go on to win the Cy Young Award in 2015 while both Fidrych and Price would finish second in Cy Young voting in the seasons where they made this list. This history bodes well for Skubal who is the odds-on favorite to win the 2024 American League Cy Young Award.
Skubal has been tremendous this season. He is 11-3 with an ERA of 2.24. He is tied for fourth in the league in wins, leading the league in ERA, fifth in strikeouts, and second in WHIP. Will Skubal be able to continue his great season as the Detroit Tigers look to get back in playoff contention?

Skubal made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2020. He has spent all five seasons of his career in the “Motor City” Skubal made his first MLB All-Star Game this season and pitched well. He tossed a scoreless frame in this year’s “Midsummer Classic.” Skubal has a career record of 34-30 with an ERA of 3.49.
Detroit Tigers Season Summary
It has been an average season for the Detroit Tigers(51-54). They are in fourth place in the American League Central and 6.5 games back of the third and final American League Wild Card spot. Detroit’s offense has been middling this season. They are 24th in batting average, 18th in home runs, and 17th in runs scored. Their offense is paced by Left Fielder Riley Greene. He leads the Tigers in every important offensive offensive category this season.
The pitching staff of the Detroit Tigers has been the far stronger part of their ballclub this season. They are 14th in ERA, 11th in strikeouts, and 10th in WHIP. Their staff is led by Skubal and Starting Pitcher Jack Flaherty. He is having a great season in his own right, but it pails in comparison to the season his teammate Skubal is having. Flaherty is 12th in the league in ERA, 11th in strikeouts, and fourth in WHIP.
When Will Skubal Take The Mound Next?
Skubal is set to take the mound tonight against the Minnesota Twins and continue a great season. He has faced the Twins two previous times this season and fared well. He surrendered a combined three earned runs over 11 innings of work while punching out 12. He took home the victory in his first start and a no decision in his second start against Minnesota.
Detroit plays the second game of their three-game set tonight against the Twins. The Tigers then begin a two-game series with the Cleveland Guardians on Monday. Both Skubal and the Tigers have a great deal to play for over the remaining 57 games of the 2024 regular season. Skubal is looking to punctuate his Cy Young case while the Detroit Tigers are looking to return to the MLB Playoffs for the first time since 2014. If Detroit wants to shock the baseball world and qualify for the playoffs, it will be on their pitching staff to shoulder the load.
