Detroit Tigers Give Away Series In Lame Duck Performance

The Detroit Tigers and the Miami Marlins finished their three-game series on Wednesday, May 15th, with the Miami Marlins taking 2-3 games against the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers won Game 1 on Monday due to a 2-run homer from Spencer Torkelson but were shut out on Tuesday and also lost via shutout in Wednesday’s game.

I’ll be honest, words can’t begin to describe how angry I am about this series’ loss to the worst team in baseball. Reese Olson pitched a gem on Tuesday and the Tiger’s offense completely abandoned him and couldn’t get him his first win of the season. The offense failed Casey Mize too who also pitched a pretty decent game.

Game 1 of the Detroit Tigers/Miami Marlins series saw the Tigers win 6-5 from some late-inning heroics by Andy Ibanez and Spencer Torkelson. In the 8th inning Ibanez hit a single which drove in Wenceel Perez and with two outs in the inning, Torkeslon hit a go ahead 2-run homer to left field making it a 6-5 game.

Closer Jason Foley was brought out for the top of the 9th and would seal the win for the Tigers with 2 strikeouts on 15 pitches. The 6 runs the offense put up in game 1 is all the runs they’d score the entire series which is just outright abysmal.

Reese Olson would be on the bump for the Detroit Tigers, while left-hander Ryan Weathers would start for Miami. Coming into the game, Olson had a 0-4 with a 2.52 ERA in the season. He’d leave the game with a 2.09 ERA after throwing eight scoreless innings. Throwing eight scoreless innings sounds like a recipe for a game-win in MLB, but the offense also needs to hold up its end of the bargain, which it failed to do.

Ryan Weathers on the other hand had a 4.54 ERA entering the game and had given up 17 earned over his last five starts which sounds like the exact type of starter you want your favorite team to be facing. Unfortunately, the Tiger’s offense made him look like a Cy Young candidate as he also pitched eight scoreless innings which brought Weather’s ERA down to 3.81 on the season.

The game remained tied after the ninth inning which caused it to go into extras where The Marlins were able to bring the Manfred-runner home in the top of the tenth on a single and a groundout. Marlins relief pitcher A.J. Puk didn’t give up a hit in the tenth and was able to get the save and secure the shutout with the Marlins winning 1-0 and the Detroit Tigers wasting a gem of a performance from Reese Olson.

Game 3 of the series would see Casey Mize pitching for the Tigers, with Trevor Rogers starting for the Marlins. Before starting the game, Trevor Rogers hadn’t had a single game where he didn’t give up a run, and with a 6.57 ERA and 4.59 FIP, fans like me were hopeful the Tiger’s offense could get to him early, put up some early runs, and hopefully win the series. Instead, Rogers pitched five scoreless innings, giving him his first scoreless game of the year and the win.

Casey Mize gave up two earned runs over six innings of work, which earned him a quality start and the loss as Detroit’s hitters were unable to score any runs, getting shutout for the second game in a row, with the final score being 2-0. The Detroit Tigers would end up being outscored 8-6 over the course of the series by the worst team in baseball and falling under .500.

Thursday, May 16th will be an off-day for the Tigers as they face off against the Diamondbacks in a three game set in Arizona starting Friday. The Marlins also have an off-day this Thursday and will begin a three game series against the Mets in Miami on Friday.
