The Detroit Pistons are looking to add more veterans to their young core. They had some struggles this season and clearly need a boost before the next starts. Veterans will be great assets to this team as they can help lead the locker room and be floor generals. The club signed eight-year NBA veteran Malik Beasley to a one-year deal earlier this week.
The signing wasn’t a big surprise, as Detroit has been searching for ways to help their team grow. There will probably be a constant movement for them in the offseason until they feel as though they’ve got the right grouping together.
Malik Beasley’s Career
Beasley, who last played in Milwaukee with the Bucks, averaged 11.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per contest while shooting 44.3% from the field. He proved to be a sniper from long-range last season, shooting 41.3 from downtown. He should be able to add some shooting strength next to Cade Cunningham.
He has made other significant stops in his career, including spending time with the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, and Los Angeles Lakers. He had multiple great seasons with all of these teams. His best was with the Denver Nuggets, where he averaged 20.7 points per game. There has been a decline in his skill as he gets older, but his experience could be a major plus side for the Pistons.
Pistons Offseason Outlook
The offseason has been kind to the Detroit Pistons, who want to improve after an abysmal 2023-24 campaign in which they only won 14 games. They went out and signed some quality veterans to the roster to play alongside their young core, including 76ers wing Tobias Harris, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Paul Reed.
They also signed former No.1 Pick Cade Cunningham to a 5-year, $224 million contract extension, and they fired Monty Williams and hired J.B. Bickerstaff as head coach, who will try to turn things around in Detroit. Bickerstaff is facing a difficult task, but the help from Beasley and the rest of the added veterans could make things easier for him.
Look for things to shift greatly in Detroit as the team tries to find its identity. Some of their top players might not get the same amount of minutes as they did in the past if these vets end up running the team. Hopefully, this will cause an incline in skill and we will see them begin to climb the standings in the 2024-25 season.
Possible Moves to Come
The Pistons could make a few more moves this offseason if they can shift their cap space around. One player who they could pick up is Isaac Okoro. He was a decent roleplayer for the Cleveland Cavaliers and probably one of the best free agents left on the market that won’t cost an extreme amount of money. Not only could he be helpful on the offensive end off the bench, but he is also a decent defender.
Another move they could make is grabbing Gary Trent Jr. as the Los Angeles Lakers struggle to bring him over. Trent Jr. can shoot beyond the arch well, and can be a solid asset for the team. He’s a hard worker and might be a great pickup for this struggling team. Honestly, at this point the Detroit Pistons might have to just keep signing small deals until the right formula presents itself.
