Detroit Pistons Set To Hire New President of Basketball Operations

Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons are expected to proceed with Trajan Langdon as their new president of basketball operations. Details around the deal are unknown, and the Pistons have yet to publicly comment about the deal.

The Detroit Pistons had a 14-68 record last season, marking one of the worst seasons in NBA history. They currently have the 5th overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. This can be a great opportunity for the Pistons to shift a change in their culture and become a better team for years to come.

Why Do The Detroit Pistons Want Trajan Langdon?

Trajan Langdon is the current general manager of the New Orleans Pelicans. He has a solid player personnel and draft record as a GM for his five seasons with the Pelicans and in his three seasons under Sean Marks as an assistant general manager with the Brooklyn Nets.

With Langdon as a part of their respective organizations, the Pelicans and Nets found solid stars for their camps. Some of the players credited under Langdon’s resume include Jarrett Allen, Caris LeVert, Zion Williamson, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy, and more.

Since the Detroit Pistons have had several lottery draft picks throughout the last few years, they could use Trajan Langdon’s keen eye for young prospects. Plus, with his past experience as a former basketball player, he understands the needs of the players through a player’s perspective. This could be the start of something better for the Detroit Pistons.

Langdon’s Playing Career

Langdon was an All-American at Duke and the 11th overall draft pick in the 1999 NBA Draft. He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers. After three years on the Cavaliers, he went on to have a successful basketball career in the EuroLeague. He garnered two championships, all-decade honors in 2010, and a EuroLeague Final Four MVP.

Win more games. Sounds simple enough. However, it can be a stretch for them to win even 30 games next season. They are more of a defensive-oriented team than an offensive one. Cade Cunningham is still a developing playmaker on the offensive floor but has a solid stat line last season of 22.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game.

The Detroit Pistons have a solid defensive player in Ausar Thompson. He was an underrated rookie last season because his offense was not as great as his defense. Ausar and fellow rookie Marcus Sasser missed the all-rookie honors.
