Detroit Pistons Star Jaden Ivey Sustains a Broken Fibula

Jaden Ivey

Sources told ESPN that the Detroit Pistons’ Jaden Ivey sustained a broken fibula in his left leg. Ivey, 22, is a three-year guard for the Pistons. Ivey will miss at least most of the remainder of the 2024-25 NBA season, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania. Ivey and the Pistons aren’t ruling out a return, depending on the Pistons’ play and potential run to the NBA Playoffs. However, Detroit will be cautious about Ivey’s rehabilitation and recovery as Ivey is a young guard on the rise.

Jaden Ivey’s Injury

On Wednesday night, Jaden Ivey sustained a broken fibula in the Detroit Pistons’ game against the Orlando Magic at Little Caesars Arena. The Pistons defeated the Magic 105-96. Detroit improved to 15-18, while Orlando fell to 20-15. Ivey left the game on a stretcher after Cole Anthony slipped and fell on Ivey’s planted leg while going for the ball. Ivey seemed to be in severe distress as he grabbed for his shin, and the Pistons’ medical staff quickly attended to him.

The Pistons’ athletic training staff held up towels to block the home crowd’s view of the injury. Both the Magic and Pistons players formed a circle around Ivey. After a lengthy delay, Ivey was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled out of the arena with a towel covering the injury. Both teams’ players consoled Ivey and Anthony, who was seemingly shaken by the play.

On Thursday morning, ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed Ivey’s injury on X, formerly Twitter. Charania wrote,Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey has sustained a broken fibula in his left leg, sources tell ESPN. Ivey has had a career season for the resurgent Pistons in his third year, averaging 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4 assists. He exited Wednesday’s game on a stretcher.”

Ivey’s Stats

Jaden Ivey, a 6-foot-4, 195-lb guard, has had a career season with the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons are a resurgent team trying to bounce back after a disastrous 2023-24 NBA season with a 14-68 record. It was a historically bad, worst-ever record for the franchise. In addition, Detroit suffered a 28-game losing streak, the longest single-season losing streak in the NBA’s history, in 2023-24.

Ivey has been averaging 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 46.0% from the field goal line and 40.9% from the three-point line this year. When it comes to his career, Ivey has averaged 16.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game while shooting 42,9% from the field goal line and 35.2% from the three-point line. His season stats are a decrease from this season’s averages minus in the assists department.

Detroit’s Next Steps

The Detroit Pistons’ next steps would be to focus on finishing up the four-game homestand strong, even without the services of Ivey. He is well-known for his athleticism, defense, three-point shooting, driving, and running.

However, Ivey’s recovery comes first, as the Pistons probably wouldn’t want him to return to the court before he’s physically and mentally ready to do so. We’ll keep an eye out on Ivey’s recovery timeline for further details in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, Detroit will host the Charlotte Hornets in a lopsided Eastern Conference matchup on paper on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern, a matchup that might turn out to be interesting.
