Detroit Lions Winners and Losers from Week 4

detroit lions

On Monday night, the Lions defeated the Seahawks 42–29, demonstrating that their offense has come back to life. The Lions performed flawlessly, preventing turnovers and not providing Seattle with a short field. Though they gave up almost 400 yards to Geno Smith, the defense managed to force two errors and stop a fourth down in the red zone. The game has produced many winners, but there are also some losers.

Winners

Jared Goff

Goff played a perfect game, literally. He was 18-18 for 292 yards and two touchdowns, along with catching a touchdown from Amon-Ra St. Brown. Despite his early-season struggles, Goff appeared to be the Goff we know and love. He was not forcing anything where he shouldn’t have been and was making timely throws. He even established a record for the most passes attempted in a single game without an incompletion. If Goff can get back to turnover-free football, the Lions will be able to beat anybody.

Sam LaPorta

Sam LaPorta performed admirably following a difficult first few weeks. With 4 receptions for 53 yards, he once again established himself as one of Goff’s top targets. LaPorta was particularly effective at breaking tackles for first downs, making plays, and getting yards after the catch. Although LaPorta has yet to score a touchdown this season, it is only a matter of time as we have seen him get more involved. When LaPorta performs well, it truly opens up the Lions’ attack and adds a new dimension to their play-action-heavy offense.

Terrion Arnold

This one may be controversial, but Terrion Arnold played very well for the Lions. He was targeted 6 times and gave up just 3 catches for 18 yards. Despite his three penalties, he was still an excellent player in coverage. Every week, Arnold has improved his coverage, but he has continued to have trouble with penalties. He has the makings of one of the NFL’s best lockdown corners, and if he can reduce his number of penalties, he will play a major role in the Lion’s defense this season.

Losers

Run Defense

Although they had played well in the previous three weeks, the Lion’s run defense was ineffective on Monday. With just 12 carries, Kenneth Walker III gained 80 yards at an average of 6.7 yards per rush. Although it shouldn’t be too alarming because this was their first poor performance, it will be something to watch out for. It would be fascinating to watch if the Lions suffer without Marcus Davenport for the entire season or if they can recover when they play the Cowboys in Week 6.

Alex Anzalone

Anzalone didn’t look well as he returned after missing Week 3 for the Lions. He was not very good in coverage and missed several tackles. He gave up 11 receptions for 92 yards and a score on 12 targets. He must recover if the Lions are to succeed defensively since he was a major factor in Seattle’s ability to get so many yards after the catch. If he performs like that again, it may cost Detroit a game, but he has been fantastic for them, so he shouldn’t have trouble coming back.
