We are days away from the 2024 NFL season and possibly the most anticipated season in Detroit Lions history. The Lions historically have been one the worst franchises in sports. Following a season, in which Detroit was a half away from reaching the team’s first-ever Super Bowl, the 2024 season has the fans of the “Motor City Kitties” believing the hype. The hype is not only local, fans across the country are starting to drink the Honolulu Blue Kool-Aid.
Why the Hype for the Detroit Lions?
If you pay attention to the Detroit Lions at all, they have been on the rise for the last couple of years. Since the addition of Brad Holmes in 2021 the Lions’ roster has completely been revamped. After being a scout for the Los Angeles Rams for 18 years, Holmes finally has the chance to be the man in charge with Detroit and so far has succeeded.
Then comes the head coach! If you have a press conference on in the background you may think you’re watching a promotion for Wrestlemania but that’s not Hulk Hogan, “Brother!” That’s Detroit’s own Dan Campbell! Campbell represents the city of Detroit absolutely perfectly! Anyone who is from the Detroit Area will tell you they take tremendous pride in being from here. The Detroit community takes on the “Detroit vs Everybody” mentality to heart and Dan Campbell embodies that mindset and culture to a T. Around here we call it “Grit!”
Detroit Lions vs Everybody
Never in our lifetime, have the Detroit Lions been considered a Super Bowl favorite. This has always been a pipe dream for die-hard Lions fans. This dream is a very real reality. Last season the Lions were 30 minutes away from their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. This year Jared Goff returns with a young squad that has a chip on their shoulder. Goff was an afterthought in the Matthew Stafford trade but has proven over and over again that he is one of the best in the league.
Goff continues to lead a top 5 offense year after year and that was no different last season with the Detroit Lions. Goff might be the most underrated NFL quarterback and all he has done is lead one team to the Super Bowl and another team to minutes from another. Goff was chosen number 1 in the NFL draft for a reason and continues to get disrespected throughout the league.
Goff’s favorite weapon Amon-Ra St.Brown also knows how it feels to be disrespected. Ask St.Brown and he will tell you every single receiver taken before him in the 2021 draft. Alongside St.Brown, third-year receiver Jameson Williams may be the fastest receiver in the league alongside Tyreek Hill. Williams has major goals this season wanting to lead the league in yards and touchdowns which could be a very achievable goal with his speed and high-powered offense. The Lions also have arguably a top 3 Tight End in Sam LaPorta returning for his second year after a great rookie season.
The Detroit Lions have a pair of dynamic running backs with the passing game. Second-year star Jaymir Gibbs has a Barry Sanders-like ability to make defenders miss in the open field. Gibbs is expected to put up great numbers and could be looking at 2,000 all-purpose yards in this offense. To add to the inside run game, David Montgomery returns for his second season with the team.
On top of all the weapons Detroit possesses, the biggest weapon of them all is the “Great Wall of Detroit” the offensive line. Holmes and Campbell have proven they want to build through the trenches. The proof is in the pudding with having one of the most dominant offensive lines in the league.
Final Thoughts on the 2024 Detroit Lions
Look for the Detroit Lions to be one of the best teams in the NFL. With the additions to the defensive line, and defensive backs including first-round pick Terrion Arnold, and an explosive offense, the Lions will be a tough game for all opponents. Players come out and play for the intense Dan Campbell who has turned this culture upside down.
This is not your “Same Old Lions.” This is a legit Super Bowl contender. Some might have trouble saying Detroit Lions and Super Bowl in the same sentence but we may need to get used to that. The hype is real! Time to start biting kneecaps!
