Detroit Lions Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs Makes History In Victory

Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs went over 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in his career in last night’s home victory over the Green Bay Packers. He has had a great regular season for a Detroit Lions team that just punched their ticket to the NFL Playoffs. Gibbs has been an integral part of a high-flying Lions offense this season as he is 17th in the league in carries, fourth in rushing yards, and eighth in the league in rushing touchdowns. Gibbs had an average game last night with 43 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown but still made history in the process.

Gibbs was drafted No. 12 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama. He neared 1,000 yards in his rookie season ending up with 945 rushing yards with 10 rushing touchdowns and 1 receiving touchdown. Will he be able to keep up his strong level of play as the Lions eye a deep playoff run?

Detroit Lions Season Summary

Detroit(12-1) has the NFL’s best record and has been powered by a spectacular offense. They average the second-most yards per game, are third in passing, fourth in rushing yards per game, and lead the league in points per game. Quarterback Jared Goff has been playing at an MVP level this season as the Detroit Lions have taken the league by storm. He is third in the league in both passing yards and passing touchdowns. Goff tossed 3 touchdowns in last night’s victory over the Green Bay Packers.

Gibbs is one half of a vaunted running back duo affectionately referred to as “Sonic” and “Knuckles.” Gibbs has earned the nickname of “Sonic” while David Montgomery is known as “Knuckles.” Montgomery and Gibbs have combined for 22 rushing touchdowns which has them third in the league amongst themselves. The teams in front of them, the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles, have five and three players respectively with rushing touchdowns this season. It has been a two-man show for the Lions in the run game in 2024.

Final Thoughts

Even though the Detroit Lions are in a good spot right now regarding playoff position, the Minnesota Vikings(10-2) are right on their heels. A slip-up or two by Detroit and they could find themselves sliding down to the No. 5 seed. Detroit has some time to rest before another tough opponent comes to town. The Buffalo Bills visit the Lions in what may be a Super Bowl preview. The Detroit Lions are one of the NFL’s best teams, if not the best, and Gibbs has been a huge part of their success. Detroit will look to keep their success going and bring the Lombardi Trophy to the “Motor City.”
