Detroit Lions Make History In Week 17 Win

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions made history in last night’s 40-34 road victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Detroit became the first team in NFL history to have 40+ points and 0 turnovers five times in a season. On Monday night, the Detroit Lions offense sliced and diced the 49ers defense. Quarterback Jared Goff threw for over 300 yards with 3 touchdown passes. Detroit’s offense put up 439 total yards in the win.

The other instances this regular season where Detroit’s offense has put up these spectacular numbers are against the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Will the offense of the Detroit Lions be able to carry this momentum into a critical Week 18 matchup with huge stakes?

Detroit Lions Season Summary

The Detroit Lions have featured a high-flying offense this regular season. They are second in yards per game and lead the league in points per game by a sizable margin. Jared Goff has been the maestro conducting the offense this season. He is second in the league in passing yards, fourth in touchdown passes, and eighth in QBR. Even though Goff will not be named NFL MVP, it should not take away from his tremendous regular season.

While Detroit’s offense has been the league’s best, their defense has not been as strong. The team has had to overcome a rash of injuries on that side of the ball, and their defense has suffered because of it. The Lions have surrendered 30+ points in three of their last four contests. That is a huge issue as the team gears up for what they hope is a deep run in the NFL Playoffs.

Final Thoughts

The Detroit Lions(14-2) enter the season’s final week atop the NFC. They are tied with the Minnesota Vikings atop the conference and the NFC North. Detroit holds the advantage due to defeating Minnesota head-to-head in Week 7. These two teams will play again on Sunday night for the NFC’s top seed.

The ramifications of Sunday’s tilt cannot be understated. The winner will secure home-field advantage throughout the NFL Playoffs while the loser will end up the No. 5 seed and possibly be on the road throughout the postseason. A team’s path becomes much easier when they play at home and need to play one fewer game to make it to the Super Bowl. With such a shoddy defense, the Detroit Lions need to rely on their offense to ensure the NFC goes through Ford Field in January.
