Detroit Lions Running Back David Montgomery Out Indefinitely With Knee Injury

Detroit Lions David Montgomery

The injury woes continued for the Detroit Lions as star Running Back David Montgomery is out indefinitely after suffering an MCL injury in yesterday’s shootout loss to the Buffalo Bills. The star running back is reportedly undergoing additional tests to assess the severity of the injury. Montgomery’s status for the final three regular season games and the NFL Playoffs is up in the air.

Montgomery has been great in 2024 as he is 20th in the league in rushing yards and fourth in the NFL in rushing touchdowns. He only had 35 total yards in yesterday’s loss before he went down with an injury. Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs will need to fill the sizable void left by the injury to Montgomery. How will the Detroit Lions deal with the loss of another one of their key players?

Detroit Lions Season Summary

Yesterday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills dropped Detroit’s record to 12-2. They are locked in a tight NFC North race with the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. Detroit is now tied with the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC’s top seed. The offense of the Detroit Lions has been spectacular this season, and Montgomery’s performance contributed to that. They are second in the league in yards per game and are leading the league in points per game.

Detroit’s defense, due to an obscene amount of injuries has not been good as of late. They are 13th in the league in yards allowed and seventh in points per game. The defense surrendered 31 points in Week 14 to the Green Bay Packers and a whopping 48 yesterday to the Buffalo Bills. The team’s defense had more terrible injury news today as Defensive Lineman Alim McNeill suffered a Torn ACL which ended his season. With so many injuries on their defense, the Detroit Lions offense will need to outscore opponents down the stretch to win games.

Final Thoughts

If the Detroit Lions are unable to figure out their defense, they are in danger of not only losing the No. 1 seed but falling into a wild card spot. Detroit looks to get back on track on Sunday on the road against the Chicago Bears. The last time these teams faced off Detroit was outscored 20-7 in the second half and former Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus butchered the late-game execution. If Eberflus had shown a baseline level of competency, Detroit may have blown a 16-point lead.
