Detroit Lions: What To Expect Coming Off The Bye Week

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions are coming off their early scheduled bye week and traveling to Dallas to take on the Cowboys in week 6. In years past the joke around Detroit would be that the Lions can’t lose this week. Well, this isn’t your Daddy’s same old Lions team. This team has a culture. This team has a personality. This team is tough. This team has grit.

Detroit Lions Teams in the Past

The Detroit Lions franchise has had so many letdowns and heartbreaks in the past. Lions fans would look forward to the bye week simply because the Detroit Lions wouldn’t lose that week. The term “SOL, Same Old Lions,” was the culture for decades around Detroit. Sometimes, we would have hope for our team, but most of the time, it was wishful thinking. The Lions were the laughingstock of the league, time after time, and unfortunately, we weren’t singing the Cindy Lauper song.

Some Detroit Lions fans even swore off the Lions, and can we blame them? Watching regime after regime comes in failing just like the ones they preceded. The Lions were consistently the bottom feeders of the league, picking at the top of the NFL draft. Most of the time, they were swinging and missing on draft picks. Free agents didn’t want to come here, and fans would wear bags on their heads inside of Ford Field every week.

Not the Same Old Detroit Lions

The culture around Detroit has changed drastically since Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell’s arrival. For the past two to three years, Detroit Lions fans have had the belief that the Lions will go into every single Sunday with a chance to win. Hell, you could even say fans expect to win on Sundays nowadays. Now, bye weeks, in the eyes of the fans, are weeks without their beloved Lions and a strategic time for the team to get healthy.

Dan Campbell came in sounding like he was going to headline Wrestlemania, and people around the NFL thought he was crazy. Fast forward to his 4th season with the Detroit Lions; he is one of two head coaches who were hired that year and still has their job (after the Robert Saleh firing this week).

The Detroit Lions were one-half away from reaching their first Super Bowl ever last season, and for the first time in team history, they were considered a preseason, legit contender to win the Super Bowl. The team has great leadership and a great foundation of young players for longevity and success.

Final Thoughts

The once-upon-a-time laughingstock of the NFL and professional sports, the Detroit Lions, are coming off their bye week to face the Dallas Cowboys. The team was able to get healthier with key players coming back to practice. The jobs that Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell have done have changed the mentality, toughness, and success of this team. The “same old Lions” narrative has gone away. Fans look at the bye week differently now. We no longer hear the jokes and laughs that were once part of the Lions organization. Be proud to be a Detroit Lions fan! One Pride! And let them hear you chant, “Jared Goff!”
