Dillon Dingler, the eleventh-rated prospect in the Detroit Tigers farm system was called up on Monday night to play against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park. Dingler started the season with Detroit’s AAA affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens where he put up 17 home runs, 52 RBI, and had a .308 batting average in seventy-one games with the Mud Hens. Dingler who played for Ohio State was drafted by Detroit in the second round of the June 2020 draft. How will he fare in the big leagues?
Dingler’s MiLB Career With Detroit

Dingler’s professional career with the Tigers began when he started playing for the Lakeland Flying Tigers in 2021 and after three games, he was promoted to Detroit’s A+ affiliate, the West Michigan Whitecaps. He played just over 30 games with the Whitecaps, putting up a .287 average and 24 RBI, until being promoted to the Erie Seawolves which are the AA team associated with the Tigers. In fifty games with the Seawolves in 2021, Dingler hit for a .202 BA, four home runs, twenty RBI, and a .578 OPS. A significantly worse performance compared to the rest of the year.
In the 107 games Dingler would play in 2022, all of them were with the Seawolves where he’d hit for a .238 BA, fourteen homers, 58 RBI, 143 strikeouts, and a .752 OPS. While it wasn’t a radical improvement, it showed he was getting better. He’d also play all of 2023 in minor leagues going from Lakeland, to Erie, to finally the Toledo Mud Hens, the AAA Tiger’s affiliate. Dingler would also start 2024 with the Mud Hens playing 71 games and hitting .308, seventeen homers, 52 RBI, and a .938 OPS. With those numbers in AAA, it was a no-brainer for Detroit to call him up after trading Carson Kelly.
Dingler Gets Called Up After Trade
Dillon Dingler finally got called up after Detroit traded their catcher Carson Kelly to the Texas Rangers for prospects Liam Hicks(catcher) and Tyler Owens(relief pitcher). Detroit acquired Carson Kelly in August of 2023 after the Arizona Diamondbacks had decided to release him. In his 18 games with Detroit in 2023, Kelly hit for a .173 average, .271 OBP, .269 SLG, and a .540 OPS. 2024 was another story for Kelly though, hitting .240, with a .716 OPS, and has thrown out eighteen runners while he was with Detroit.
Overall, it seems like a pretty solid trade for both the Detroit Tigers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Snakes get a solid defensive catcher who also seems like a respectable hitter. The Tigers get two prospects, along with being able to call up Dingler now that he is not blocked by Kelly. Dingler himself has thrown out nineteen runners in AAA which hopefully means he’ll be a good defensive replacement for Kelly while also hopefully providing a solid bat for the Tigers.
Dingler Doubles in Detroit
Dillon Dingler’s first game as a Detroit Tiger was against the Cleveland Guardians in Comerica Park on Monday, July 29. While the Tigers lost to the Guardians 8-4, it was a decent night for Dingler as he picked up his first Major League hit, walk, and RBI in the game. In the bottom of the seventh, Dingler doubled to left field driving in Mark Canha, and in the bottom of the eighth, he walked on four straight balls after fouling off the first one. It’s got to feel pretty good for Dingler to get his first hit out of the way, especially in his first game as a Tiger to boot.
