With the sun setting on a summer of high hopes and intense practices, the Cleveland Browns are preparing themselves for their final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Nevertheless, fans will have to wait a little while longer for them to see their star quarterback, Deshaun Watson. Deshaun Watson won’t play in this preseason game. The expectation had been at a very high level, but it emerged that Watson would not feature.
Deshaun Watson’s Long-Awaited Return
It’s been a long, kind of tenuous time off for Deshaun Watson, who hasn’t played in a game since November 2023. He spent his days gingerly recovering from surgery on his right shoulder, which he needed after being injured last year. Although the road to recovery for Browns fans has been a bit of a wait-and-see situation, his journey has shown Watson progressing well. He’s been grinding hard to get back to his old self and hitting various milestones along the way.
Watson has been doing some great work in the offseason. He started with throwing every other day and progressed to 7-on-7 and 11-on-11, even going up against the Minnesota Vikings’ first-team defense during some joint practices for training camp. Watson was indeed back in the groove, evident from the way he hit his targets in tight windows and the number of impressive deep-ball throws.
A Mixed Week of Practice
It was kind of a mixed bag for Deshaun Watson during the week leading up to the Seattle game. On Tuesday, he looked sharp, making some memorable throws to receivers like Elijah Moore and Jerry Jeudy. The following day, though, he had general soreness in his arm from the work, limiting practice. But head coach Kevin Stefanski tried to quell any fears, saying that Watson is “feeling fine.”
It had been uncertain how much Watson would participate in the final preseason game. After he returned to throwing and receiving his usual first-team reps on Thursday, the coaching staff decided to hold him out. That lets him conceivably keep healing and not take any type of undue chances.
Looking Ahead
The preseason finale for the Browns will be played in Seattle without Watson, but there is some good news. His absence from this game does not dampen at all the positivism for the team. The Browns are preparing for their opener against the Dallas Cowboys on September 8 at Cleveland Browns Stadium. As this game plays out, all eyes will be on Watson to return to his old self, leading the team with force and power that the fans have been waiting to see.
Though it is always a disappointment not to see vital players like Deshaun Watson in action, the priority is his health and fitness for the regular season. Whatever the Browns can do, they are doing it to get him ready for all that will come at him in the new season. As preseason draws to a close, the excitement for the new season increases, along with hopes of a successful campaign with Watson at the helm.
