After winning an NBA Championship, Derrick White was asked about the Boston Celtics’ goals in the new season. White said, “Every year we come to this gym, and we got one goal: to put another banner up… That’s no different this year, as it was last year, and we understand the challenge that we have in front of us.” This past summer, the Boston Celtics won their 18th NBA Championship. Now, they aim to repeat and become the first NBA team to win back-to-back titles since the Golden State Warriors.
Boston Celtics Look To Repeat
The Boston Celtics are focused and prepared at the dawn of the 2024-25 NBA season and brought back the key players in their championship run. However, the recent odds for back-to-back NBA Champions have not been favorable. It has not happened since the Golden State Warriors went back-to-back, and in the past five years, no defending NBA Champion has advanced past the second round of the playoffs.
After the Toronto Raptors championship in 2019, they were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the second round in 2020. Then, the Los Angeles Lakers were beaten in the first round by the Phoenix Suns in 2021. In 2022, the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks were defeated by the Boston Celtics in the second round. In 2023, the Golden State Warriors were eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round. And, most recently, in 2024, the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Denver Nuggets in the second round.
But, ignoring the second-round statistic, the Boston Celtics still have the nucleus to compete for a championship. Their two stars, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, are locked into long-term contracts, and many of their other key players are secured as well. Derrick White and Sam Hauser signed extensions this offseason to keep the core together. The only aspect that keeps the team from full strength is the health of Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis is expected to miss time at the start of the season because of an ankle injury suffered in the NBA Finals.
Celtics’ Competition
In the past five years, the defending NBA Champions have fallen to teams in their conference. So, the Boston Celtics should not look past anyone in the Eastern Conference. Right now, the Celtics’ most formidable competition in the East is the New York Knicks. The Knicks were the two seed in the Eastern Conference last season before injuries and the Indiana Pacers ended their playoff run. They still have Jalen Brunson, O.G. Anunoby, Josh Hart, and others, but also made some of the biggest moves in the offseason, trading for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns.
They lost players like Isaiah Hartenstein, Donte DiVincenzo, and Julius Randle, but are still one of the strongest teams in the NBA. Some of the other threats to the Boston Celtics in the East include the Philadelphia 76ers, the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Miami Heat. The 76ers and Celtics are very familiar with each other and Boston has usually come out on top in their playoff battles, but the 76ers added Paul George this offseason. Meanwhile, the Bucks have an aging core, but Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard are still capable of beating anyone when they are healthy.
The Miami Heat and Jimmy Butler have always given the Celtics problems. Other young, hungry teams like the Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Indiana Pacers can also threaten the Celtics championship aspirations.
Final Thoughts
Derrick White claims that the Boston Celtics’ goal is still the same: to win an NBA Championship. But the odds are not great, and the Eastern Conference has many talented, hungry, and improved teams. And the Western Conference is also stacked with elite teams. So, the Boston Celtics’ goal of going back-to-back will be no easy task.
