The NCAA Tournament thus far has been a little bit lackluster because the good teams have been living up to the expectations set for them at the beginning of the tournament. That was the case until Derik Queen’s game-winner against Colorado State on Sunday night. That game-winner was the energy shot this tournament needed heading to the Sweet 16. Here are the reasons why that shot will boost the tournament in a positive direction that will be remembered.
Queen’s Shot Was the Highlight Of Best Game Thus Far
Queen’s shot was the shot of the tournament in the best game of the tournament to this point of the tournament. Queen’s shot off the glass came shortly after Jalen Lake’s three gave Colorado State the 71-70 lead before the Terps called timeout. The game was back and forth the entire second half. Lake’s three had the Terps fans going “Here we go again with the Buzzer-Beaters.” But the freshman phenom Queen said in the timeout: “I want the MF Ball!” and stepped up and made the toughest shot of the tournament when the Terrapins needed it at the time of the shot.
Queen’s shot was one of the most trending topics late Sunday once it happened because we all knew that this tournament needed that shot to go in when it did. After all, it was starting to drain the energy from us to watch these games because there were hardly any close games throughout the first two rounds other than that game. People were getting restless, especially watching seven SEC teams and the Duke Blue Devils dominating through the first two rounds.
The Tournament’s Energy Is Now Heightened
The games are now ready to get the energy pumping with the competitive juices, especially after Queen’s shot. Most of the Sweet 16 matchups should be competitive games down to the wire like the Colorado State vs Maryland game was last weekend in the Round of 32. Games like Duke vs Arizona, Florida vs Maryland, Auburn vs Michigan, Alabama vs BYU, etc. should all be exciting matchups in the Sweet 16. They all should come down to the last possession because of the talent of all of those teams.
If all of those games get great finishes and keep the excitement going again from Queen’s shot, then Queen’s shot will become the turning point of the 2025 NCAA Tournament being good to great. Basketball fans should thank Queen until the Sweet 16 games start play on Thursday evening. Let’s hope the magic of March stays throughout the rest of the tournament after that shot because I want to continue to ride that magical wave of this majestic game-winner by Queen to April 7
