Nikola Jokic is no stranger to making history. The Denver Nuggets star has won an NBA Championship, three MVPs, and had stat lines the league has never seen. His style blends efficient scoring with dynamic playmaking. Denver has had a rough start to the season. They have not looked as dominant as they have in past years. That hasn’t stopped Jokic from making NBA history yet again.
Denver Nuggets Nikola Jokic Makes NBA History…Again
Through five games, Nikola Jokic has scored 152 points with 58 rebounds and 50 assists. This makes him the first player in NBA history to record 150/50/50 through five games. Even in an era of higher scoring, this is impressive. Getting the assists means relying on teammates to make their shots which is not always a given. Rebounds require being in the right position to snag the ball. If he keeps this pace up, he could be on pace to break more NBA records throughout the season.
It isn’t surprising he is able to stuff the stat sheet. The offense runs through Nikola Jokic. While Jamal Murray sometimes takes over the ball-handling duties, Jokic is the one who makes the offense hum like a well-oiled machine. This season especially, the team is relying on the three-time MVP. They have let many players from their championship run walk in free agency. The depth on the bench is non-existent right now, meaning more is being asked of Jokic and the other starters. While Jokic has had a fantastic start to the season, the team has been struggling.
Early Season Struggles
The Denver Nuggets are 2-3 through the first five games. While this isn’t the worst start in the NBA, the play on the court has been concerning. Their two wins have come against the Toronto Raptors and the Brooklyn Nets, two teams projected to finish near the bottom of the standings. Their three losses have been to the Thunder, Clippers, and Timberwolves. They weren’t blown out of any of those games but didn’t have enough juice at the end to close out the game.
Part of the reason for the early season struggles is the lack of help Nikola Jokic is getting. Jamal Murray is only averaging 16.2 points from the field, shooting an abysmal 36.5% from the field. In last night’s loss to Minnesota, he only scored six points in 22 minutes. He signed a max-contract extension in the offseason so the team is expecting high-level production.
Plenty Of Time
There is plenty of time to right the ship. Nikola Jokic will always give the Denver Nuggets a chance. He has proven in the past that he can take a mediocre roster and get them to the playoffs. However, the Nuggets have some concerns to address. Teams like the Thunder look unstoppable, and if Denver is going to get to their level, they need their entire roster to play better, not just Jokic.
