There is good news in the sporting world and in Denver Broncos Country. The National Football League kicks off the season tonight in Kansas City with an AFC Championship rematch between the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs. For Broncos Country the good news is that the team announced their captains before the opening game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, September 8, 2:00 MST.
Unprecedented Election
Denver Broncos Quarterback Bo Nix is many things. He is 24 years old from Arkadelphia, AR, married, and was the starting quarterback at the University of Auburn as a true freshman. Nix was also the starting quarterback at the University of Oregon for three years and had over 60 combined starts at the two schools. Nix had a historic season last year at Oregon. He had the highest completion percentage of any quarterback in NCAA history at 77.45%
Nix also broke Oregon’s record for completions (364) and passing yards (4,508), led the NCAA with 51 total touchdowns, and threw only three interceptions. All of this led to him being drafted 12th overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2024 NFL draft. Nix was also named the first rookie quarterback to start an opening day game for the Denver Broncos since Hall of Fame and Denver icon John Elway. Yesterday, he became the first rookie to be named a captain for the Denver Broncos since Ring of Fame honoree Floyd Little in 1967.
Nix is saying all the right things as he sets out on his rookie campaign:
“It’s an honor, it’s a privilege. I’m excited to be with this group, excited to be a captain,” Nix told reporters after Wednesday’s practice. “I don’t take it lightly. I know it’s a big deal and it hasn’t happened often, but I’m not going to take it for granted. I’m just going to come to work every single day and just prove that you can be a captain. Excited to work with these other guys and I think it’s good that we can get out there and set the tone.”
A Clear Sign
The election of these six captains signals that change is the new norm in Denver this year. Courtland Sutton is the only returning captain from last year’s 8-9 Denver Broncos team. Russell Wilson has moved on to Pittsburgh, Mike McGlinchey is no longer a captain, and Justin Simmons now leads Atlanta’s secondary while Kareem Jackson tries to find a landing spot. On special teams, Will Lutz replaces last year’s captain, Riley Dixon.
The locker room has a fresh sense of urgency and focus this year. The Denver Broncos are turning to their younger players to reset a winning culture under new leadership. This changing of the guard marks a new era, and the Broncos are counting on their fresh leadership to steer them back to championship contention.
