The Denver Broncos keep their own, restructuring Courtland Sutton’s deal to add more money and incentives for this coming season. This was an expected move, as the veteran receiver was holding out this offseason for a new contract. He ultimately is getting something similar with a stopgap-type deal. It won’t quell any concerns for 2025 with no guaranteed money on the books with the current deal. But at least for this season, it is good enough for him to come back into the building to prepare for the 2024 season. Sutton participated in training camp today with this new deal getting done earlier on Wednesday.

According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, Courtland Sutton stays with the Denver Broncos and agrees to a reworked contract that allows him to earn “up to $15.2 million this season, including $1.5M in new incentives.” The team captain participates in training camp with this new deal, as he will make more money in 2024. This doesn’t change what he makes in 2025, as none of the $13.5 million base salary is guaranteed. This just delays the deadline another season, as Sutton is a pending free agent in 2026.
Still, it was key for the Broncos to retain the experienced pass catcher, as he hasn’t hit his ceiling since tearing his ACL and MCL back in 2020 but a few years removed, has looked close to his peak self. While the offense won’t be ranked in the top half of the league based on personnel, Sutton should see his targets go up with less competition compared to the last few seasons. If Denver’s top weapon can stay healthy, he could be a big-time threat for head coach Sean Payton to utilize.
Former Second Rounder Gets More Incentives as Top Pass Catcher
Courtland Sutton’s season last year had its ups and downs for the Denver Broncos. He set a career-high in touchdowns, with 10, but that was on 772 yards and 59 catches while playing most of the season. He was banged up for a minor injury for a game or two but in 16 games for 2023, it was an average year for him. Even the year before with Wilson for his first year with Denver playing in 15 games, Sutton had 829 yards but way fewer touchdowns with two and more receptions with 64.
His 2019 season with Drew Lock was his breakout season, with 1,112 yards and 72 receptions along with six touchdowns. This led to his first Pro Bowl nod, as he will have to repeat past success to be considered a true number-one wide receiver. Right now, he is a starting-caliber receiver in Denver and has been relatively healthy as of late. Now without Jeudy in the mix, Sutton is in line for a better season with the Broncos in 2024.
Veteran Receiver Could Have Breakout Season with Rookie
Despite not hitting 1,000 yards since 2019, the top receiver for the Denver Broncos Courtland Sutton should be the focal point of Payton’s offense. The projected alpha pass catcher does have to stay healthy, as he could have some stability if first-round rookie Bo Nix can start and connect with him early and often. Even if they have Nix’s former teammate at Oregon Troy Franklin, Sutton has proven his talent with quarterbacks like Russell Wilson in the last two seasons.
After trading Jeudy to the Cleveland Browns, Denver signed Josh Reynolds and re-signed Tim Patrick with Marvin Mims Jr. also on the roster. This makes Sutton the safety net potentially for the former 12th overall pick, as Nix is seeing first-team reps ahead of Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson, who the Broncos traded for. The contested catch artist with his 6’4″ and 216-pound frame could play a “Michael Thomas” type role in Payton’s offense with his hand-selected passer.
