Denver Broncos Return Home For Week 8 Showdown

The Denver Broncos look to remain on track this week against the Carolina Panthers.

Coming off an emotional win in New Orleans and a mini-bye week, the Denver Broncos will need to shift their focus to the Carolina Panthers. The Broncos will be favored to win, but they are not in a position to overlook anyone, including the Panthers.

Potential Trap

We like to think that our sports heroes are bigger than life and are not susceptible to the same emotions and struggles that we normal people wrestle with day in and day out. They are constantly focused on the task at hand without any outside influences ever impacting how they think, feel, or perform, right? We like to think that they have a unique ability to shut out everything from the outside and only hear the important things.

This week for the Denver Broncos falls into a category that, in recent years, has been coined as a trap. A trap that is set for a team that hears the noise of the outside and the rumblings that drown out even the most hardened of professionals. The Carolina Panthers come into the “Mile High City” with a 1-6 record, and they have looked every bit the part of a team that is arguably one of the worst in the National Football League. The Panthers are at or near the bottom of every offensive and defensive category.  That, however, is the danger and the very definition of “trap.”

The Denver Broncos have not been good at home this season(1-2), but there was once a time when the notion of coming to Denver to play the Broncos had a mystique of invincibility. The Broncos have an opportunity to re-establish the Mile High Magic, and it begins this week. They cannot look past the lowly Panthers and get trapped.

Potential Trade

The trade deadline is Tuesday, November 5, and the rumor mill is grinding. Names like Davante Adams and DeAndre Hopkins have been traded or will be traded any day now. The question surrounding the Denver Broncos organization this week is a simple one: buy, sell, or stand.

There are valid arguments for all three options, but does giving up more draft capital or taking on more salary in a limited cap situation offer little benefit? The Denver Broncos are in rebuilding mode, and they need as many resources as possible to rebuild the storied franchise.

Cooper Kupp is not the answer, nor is Kyle Pitts or any other player on the trading block. The answer is to continue to stack wins, stock draft picks, and stop the culture that has pervaded this organization since the Sheriff rode off into the sunset after Super Bowl 50. The Broncos organization, as a whole, has shown this year that they are capable of success without reaching any longer. Maybe they have learned their lesson as they continue to pay Russell Wilson to win in Pittsburgh.

Potential Playoffs

If the season ended today – and it does not- the Denver Broncos, yes, those Denver Broncos, would be in the playoffs. Those are words that have not been uttered in the town in some time. They were certainly not words that anyone was speaking before the season started. The experts in Las Vegas had the Broncos at five wins for the season. They most likely will reach that number this week.

Numbers only mean so much as the schedule gets infinitely more difficult after the Panthers leave town. The Denver Broncos will have road games against the Ravens and the Chiefs. How the Broncos handle the two MVP candidates, Mahomes and Jackson, will be a determining factor in how the narrative is told for the remainder of the season.

Final Thoughts

The Denver Broncos are in a unique situation as they face the Carolina Panthers. The season has produced some solid progress but also shown that the team has a long way to go to be serious contenders in the AFC.  The Denver Broncos are not bigger than life, but they have an opportunity to make a big impression this week against a team that they should beat.
