The Denver Broncos had a season to forget in 2023. Russell Wilson and Sean Payton did not see eye to eye, which caused the offense to stagnate. Wilson was cut in the offseason, which led to the largest dead cap hit in NFL history. The Broncos may be without another star player if they don’t figure out the contract situation. Star wide receiver Courtland Sutton was absent from voluntary workouts.
Denver Broncos Courtland Sutton Absent From Camp
#Broncos WR Courtland Sutton did not report Monday for voluntary workouts as he seeks a new contract, per source.
Sutton is going on his 10th starting QB in seven seasons and has only $2 million guaranteed left on his deal. He had 10 TDs in 2023 while ranking 56th in targets. pic.twitter.com/93rA35XdM4

Courtland Sutton has been one of the Denver Broncos’ bright spots. Last season, he had ten touchdowns despite the team’s poor offense. It is also impressive that he has produced despite so much turnover at the quarterback position. This season, he will see his tenth starting quarterback of his career. This is usually not a recipe for success for a wide receiver.
Sutton also wants what every other NFL player wants, which is long-term security. He is in the last year of his deal and only has $2 million guaranteed. Given his production, he is looking to be taken care of by the Denver Broncos.
Not The Only Wide Receiver Holding Out
This is a theme of the 2024 offseason. CeeDee Lamb and Justin Jefferson were absent from voluntary workouts because of contract negotiations. Brandon Aiyuk is involved in an interesting situation with the San Francisco 49ers, and Tee Higgins seems to have accepted his fate of playing on the franchise tag. The Denver Broncos join the list of teams that have wide receivers who want to get paid.
It will be interesting to see what the Denver Broncos decide to do with Sutton. The team is rebuilding and could decide to gain more draft capital by trading him. However, that would leave an already depleted roster in an even worse shape. As draft day approaches, it will be interesting to see how the Broncos approach this situation.
