Denmark will host Switzerland in Copenhagen for the opening match of League A in the Nations League. Denmark will be looking to secure their first victory in five matches on Thursday evening, as they make their long-awaited return to Parken Stadion following their elimination in the Euro 2024 last-16 stage. The Danes failed to secure a single victory in the group stage, managing to score only two goals. However, Morten Hjulmand’s incredible strike against England will go down in history as one of the standout goals of the tournament. After a disappointing performance at the Euros, the hosts are now preparing for a fresh start under the guidance of caretaker boss Morten Wieghorst.

In contrast, Switzerland performed significantly better. With victories over Hungary and Italy, coupled with a draw against Germany, there is genuine optimism for what lies ahead. Switzerland looks like they can get a point on the road, even though the trip to Copenhagen will be tough.

Denmark vs. Switzerland: Team News & Stats

Matt O’Riley has unfortunately been unable to join Denmark’s squad due to his recovery from an ankle injury sustained in his debut match for Brighton & Hove. Maurits Kjaergaard was initially called up as his replacement, but he withdrew and now Mathias Jensen from Brentford has been included by interim coach Lars Knudsen. The new appointment came after Morten Wieghorst had to take sick leave. Denmark will be counting on the vast experience of Christian Eriksen and Kasper Schmeichel. Unfortunately, both Andreas Christensen and Rasmus Hojlund will not be in the squad due to injuries.

Switzerland’s Yann Sommer has recently announced his retirement from international football. As a result, Gregor Kobel is expected to take his place in goal for Thursday evening’s match. After a remarkable tenure, Xherdan Shaqiri has bid farewell to the Rossocrociati. With 32 goals under his belt, including some memorable strikes in major finals, Shaqiri leaves behind a legacy of excellence in his 125 appearances. Also, Fabian Schar is focused on club football. The Danish squad heading to Copenhagen remains quite familiar. The midfield will be led by captain Granit Xhaka, while Manuel Akanji continues to be the key figure in defense.

Denmark vs. Switzerland: Head-to-Head

These two nations have met each other just three times. Denmark has won just one of these matches and the other two have ended in a draw.
