Demetrious Johnson Big Announcement of Retirement: Emotional Speech

Demetrious Johnson Big Announcement of Retirement

Demetrious Johnson is now 38 years old, and he announced his retirement. Throughout his career, he has fought 30 professional fights, where he only lost four, and one of them was a draw. His last fight was against Adriano Moraes, and most importantly, he won that match in the ONE flyweight championship. He conquered the Octagon in the third match that occurred in May of the year 2023. Most often, Johnson is regarded as one of the best fighters of mixed martial arts of the present generation.

Demetrious Johnson’s Speech

Demetrious Johnson revealed to the audience that he respects the opportunity and he’ll be moving on his way to move forward and become better in his life. He even said before his retirement that he’d be retiring after the Adriano Moraes fight, but it was not confirmed. Now we know that we will not ever see Demetrious Johnson in the Octagon again.

Demetrious Johnson expressed his thoughts in these words: “Like I said last time when I came to Denver, Colo., I told you guys it was potentially my last fight, and I was not lying. I am done. I am done competing in mixed martial arts, and I want to thank you guys so much for giving me the opportunity.”

Johnson, who may still fight for ONE in Jiu-jitsu, was inducted into the ONE Championship Hall of Fame after his speech. After his victory over Adriano Moraes in a ONE Fight Night event in Broomfield, Colorado, 16 months ago, Johnson has only engaged in podcasts and grappling tournaments.

Career in UFC

He began his career in 2009 and has been a part of UFC since 2011. In 2012, he started his journey as the first flyweight champion after defeating Ian McCall and many more great champions in a four-man tournament. A lot of guys win a lot of different titles, but the hard part is when you have to defend and retain it. Johnson reigned the UFC’s flyweight division and successfully defended his title 11 times in a row, breaking the famous record of Anderson Silva. The string of continuous victories was broken by Henry Cejudo, who was declared the winner by split decision in the fight held at UFC 227 in August 2018 and thus crowned the new flyweight champion.

Final Thoughts

Our Champion then came to the ONE Championship later that year and moved on in his career. But now is the time for this legend to move on further in his life and open another chapter of his life. A lot of combat sports champions are retiring this year, especially from MMA. Including fighters from the women’s division and UFC’s famous fighter, Tony Ferguson, so Demetrious Johnson isn’t alone in taking this big decision this year.
