Detroit is the home of one of the best running back duos in the NFL, David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery is in his second year with the Lions and continues to thrive. The Lions are coming off an impressive road victory against the Arizona Cardinals in week 3. Montgomery was an offensive standout in the 20-13 win.
David Montgomery as a Lion
David Montgomery began his career with the Chicago Bears, where he played for 4 seasons. In his first 4 seasons, he had 1 thousand yard season on the ground with a total of 26 touchdowns. The Lions would sign the free agent running back in 2023 replacing fan favorite Jamaal Williams. Williams had come off a season where he broke the franchise record for rushing touchdowns in a single season. Williams was beloved by the fans and a great player for locker room morale. Detroit was coming off a second half of the season push towards the playoffs falling a game short in 2022.
The Lions were in a position where they were on a team on the rise and needed to replace “locker room” guys with more talent. And boy did they! Bringing in Montgomery from NFC North rivals the Bears, fans were skeptical at first. Montgomery has proven to be the upgrade the Lions needed for the position in his first year. Pairing up with rookie Jahmyr Gibbs in 2023, the duo has quickly become of the best in football.
David Montgomery had his second thousand yard rushing total in his first year in Detroit. He also added a career high of 13 touchdowns in his 5th season in the league. There is and was a lot of expectations for Montgomery and the Lions coming into the 2024 season.
David Montgomery in 2024
David Montgomery started the 2024 season off with a bang against the Los Angeles Rams in week 1. The Lions fans were ecstatic as Stafford and the Rams came to Detroit for the first Sunday Night Football game of the year. The Lions won that nail biter of a game in overtime thanks mainly to David Montgomery. Montgomery took the ball in OT, pounding the rock all the way down the field, scoring the game winning touchdown. He had a total of 91 yards on the ground along side his game winning score.
Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Bucs was a game to forget. The Lions lost their identity throwing the ball over 50 times. Week 3 was a different story. Detroit decided to ride the back of their vicious runner David Montgomery. Montgomery finished the game with 105 rushing yards adding his 3rd touchdown of the early season. He led the team to its second win of the season.

David Montgomery is an absolute beast in the backfield for Detroit. This man runs through defenders like he is on a mission to bring pain to his opponents. In a world of duel backs, Montgomery has to be in the conversation as a top 10 running back in the NFL. He embodies what Detroit and the Lions are all about, toughness and grit!
