David Datro Fofana was one of several Chelsea players left in limbo when the transfer window closed nearly two weeks ago, forced to train with the rest of the squad’s outcasts. Fofana is a senior Ivory Coast international, despite never having played for any of the youth teams. He earned his first cap on September 22, 2019, in a match against Niger, and his second appearance came in a friendly against Burundi.
Fortunately, the Greek Super League’s transfer window remained open a bit longer, and reports suggest David Datro Fofana has managed to secure a move there just before it closes later today. According to Fabrizio Romano, Fofana is set to join AEK Athens on a season-long loan, filling the fifth of Chelsea’s six allowed international loan slots.
The 21-year-old’s move is still pending final paperwork and a medical, with the Greek transfer window closing Wednesday night. Talks, which started after August 30, saw a breakthrough after AEK took the lead once transfer windows across the top five leagues had closed. The Blues originally signed David Datro Fofana from Molde in January 2023 for £8.4m.
David Datro Fofana’s Role At AEK Athens

David Datro Fofana is confident in taking on shots whenever he finds space, relying on his powerful right foot but also showing competence with his left. His ability to hold up play and give teammates time to join the attack is a crucial trait, which should help him adapt to the physical demands of Premier League football.
His ambition drives him to study the game’s top players to refine different aspects of his play. He’s shared how he models his dribbling on Ronaldinho and the original Ronaldo, emulates Cristiano Ronaldo’s finishing and positioning, observes Messi’s directional changes, and looks to Ibrahimovic for mastering physical duels. This tailored approach to his development shows his commitment to evolving into a multi-dimensional player.
With an outstanding first touch and a burst of explosive speed, David Datro Fofana is difficult to catch as he charges toward the opposition’s goal. His playing style is somewhat reminiscent of Leipzig’s Timo ‘Turbo’ Werner, who also played for Chelsea.
Financial Criteria Involved
AEK Athens initially pursued Fofana before the Greek transfer window closed, but talks hit a standstill. However, recent reports confirm that negotiations have resumed and are nearing a positive outcome. David Datro Fofana has approved a loan move and the terms have been settled, including a £20 million option for AEK to make the transfer permanent.
This fee is significantly higher than the club’s previous record of £5.5 million for Orbelin Pineda in 2023. David Datro Fofana’s signing would be a significant boost for AEK, strengthening their attacking options for the upcoming season.
