Dallas Mavericks Point Guard Dante Exum is expected to miss three months after undergoing right wrist surgery on Tuesday, sources told Shams Charania. Exum, 29, suffered a quite serious right wrist injury during a training camp workout and sought several opinions before finalizing a medical decision for himself.
Exum’s three-month absence probably won’t affect the Mavericks for the long term. However, his absence is an early-season blow to the Mavericks’ backcourt. The Mavericks will rely heavily on Point Guard Spencer Dinwiddie, Shooting Guard Quentin Grimes, and Guard Jaden Hardy in the interim.
Exum’s right wrist injury isn’t his first rodeo. Exum has been affected by various injuries since his professional basketball career began in 2014. The Utah Jazz selected him with the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NBA Draft out of Thomas Carr College in Melbourne and Lake Ginninderra in Canberra, ACT.
Dante Exum and the Dallas Mavericks
Dante Exum has been a topic of discussion. Exum has been a game-changer for the Dallas Mavericks since the 2023 NBA offseason. He also emerged as a key role player in Dallas, Texas, since the 2023-24 NBA season.
Exum made his team debut for the Mavericks on October 25, 2023, in a 126-119 win over the San Antonio Spurs. He followed up with a season-high 26 points with a career-high seven three-pointers on December 12, 2023, in a 127-125 over the Los Angeles Lakers. He also helped the Mavericks advance to the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics in June 2024.
Dante Exum’s Former Teams
Dante Exum’s resume might not be extensive and might be journeyman-like in fan eyes. However, Exum’s resume wasn’t that bad, as the Dallas Mavericks seemed to see his potential as an NBA player. Exum played professional basketball in Europe with FC Barcelona and Partizan Belgrade for two seasons from 2021 to 2023 before joining the Dallas Mavericks in 2023.
Exum’s longest tenure with an NBA team was with the Utah Jazz. He played in Salt Lake City, Utah, for five seasons from 2014 to 2019. But his only awards so far are abroad, as he earned the titles of ABA League Champion, All-ABA League Team, and Spanish Cup winner, all of which were received in 2023.
Dante Exum As a Key Reserve
Dante Exum’s right wrist injury sent shockwaves through the Dallas Mavericks organization and the NBA world. Exum’s injury ultimately required surgery, so he’ll be out for at least three months. If everything works as planned, his earliest return will be on January 9, 2025, against the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Mavericks have a deep team, so the Exum injury shouldn’t affect them too much in the time being. Exum’s a key reserve in Dallas, Texas, but the Mavericks’ combination of Jaden Hardy, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Quentin Grimes can make do and replace Exum’s services in the coming months.
