Russian No.1 Daniil Medvedev has made a strong start to the French Open after making it through to the Third Round on Thursday. The World No. 5 had a tough First-Round matchup as he faced Dominic Koepfer from Germany. Despite winning the first two sets comfortably (6-3, 6-4), the former US Open winner struggled in the third. The gritty German came back and took the third set 7-5 in his favor before the Russian resumed the business in the fourth.
Medvedev handled the rallies from there on and got those crucial points, winning the fourth 6-3 and ending the match in his favor.

The Second-Round match between a Russian and a Serb was anticipated to be exciting but turned out to be disappointing. Daniil Medvedev began on a strong note, displaying his brilliant 8-3 clay court record for the season. He cruised past Kecmanovic 6-1 in the first set while making only six unforced errors. His powerful shots hitting the baseline were too hot to handle for the Serbian.
The second set started similarly for the 28-year-old. Within 55 minutes of the match, Medvedev, with 23 winners already had a 5-0 lead in the second. However, Miomir was seen suffering from an injury in the second set and soon he was forced to retire, giving the match an unfortunate end. This abrupt ending has given Daniil a simple pass to the Third Round of the French Open.

This is only the third time that Daniil Medvedev has managed to reach this stage of the Roland Garros. The win over Kecmanovic marked the ninth win of his Clay-Court Grand Slam career. In totality, it’s not impressive compared to what he has achieved on other surfaces, which is what he would like to improve on. Moreover, his next-round opponent will be decided after the end of all the plays on Thursday.
Daniil Medvedev will now grace the clay court for his third-round match on Saturday.
