American tennis star Danielle Collins was supposed to retire at the end of the 2024 season. But, the 30-year-old has changed her mind and will be back on the WTA Tour in 2025. This decision came nine months after she made her retirement announcement. Collins first announced that she would retire from tennis after losing a three-set marathon to Iga Swiatek in the second round of the Australian Open this year.
Danielle Collins later confirmed the decision multiple times, even after winning the biggest title of her career at the Miami Open. She claimed that she wanted to step away from the sport earlier to increase her chances of becoming a mother. Collins changed her mind and shared her decision to prolong her career on her Instagram post.
Collins Has Made the Fans Suspicious
Danielle Collins was supposed to mark her final appearance at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals. But the fans started to be suspicious when her name appeared on the official entry list for the 2025 United Cup. That is the first tournament of the new season. Danielle Collins was listed along with Coco Gauff for the mixed team tournament in Perth and Sydney from December 27-January 5. A few hours after that, she confirmed on her social media that she was not retiring.
Previously, Collins declined an on-court ceremony at the US Open. The ceremony is often customary for American players participating in their final US Open. She later admitted she didn’t want to have “an all-about-me moment” and preferred to do something in private. Danielle Collins has not competed since losing in the first round to World No. 152 Olivia Gadecki in Guadalajara at the beginning of September.
Collins Remained Steadfast Throughout the Year
After her loss in the second round of the Australian Open in January, Collins stated that the 2024 season would be her final one. However, she remained steadfast throughout the year and played some of the best tennis of her career. In March, the 2022 Australian Open finalist won the 1000-level Miami Open. She followed it up by winning at Charleston the following week.
The World No. 9 also made her first Olympics thanks to her surge in the rankings after the back-to-back victories. However, while in Paris, she suffered heat stroke and strained her abdomen and had to retire in the quarterfinals in a fiery match with Iga Swiatek. Danielle Collins played in only three tournaments since, including a first-round exit at the US Open.
Collins Has Been Struggling With Health Issues
The retirement decision came from Collins as she wanted to be focused on starting a family. But while she was expected to complete her career at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, Collins, who was also in Florida during Hurricane Milton, shared her plans have not gone as expected.
Danielle Collins explained how her ongoing challenges with endometriosis, an ailment that affects the uterus, influenced her decision to prolong her career. She admitted that she will keep playing until there is more certainty around her fertility journey. “The only guarantee for now will be some more epic matches,” she wrote in her post. So, Danielle Collins will kick off her 2025 season competing at the United Cup ahead of the Australian Open.
