30-year-old Danielle Collins is playing in her final US Open. The former NCAA Champion and college graduate announced at the beginning of 2024 that she was retiring from competitive tennis at the end of the year. Collins expressed a desire to start a family and embark on non-tennis-related ventures. She earned a bachelor’s degree in media and business from the University of Virginia.
Collins played singles (and doubles with Caroline Garcia) at her final US Open. Danielle Collins’ first-round match was considered a tough matchup against fellow American, 25-year-old Caroline Dolehide. Collins owned the head-to-head record. However, her recent heatstroke in Paris hindered her training for the hardcourt season after the Olympics.
Danielle Collins Makes Quick Exit After Loss
Danielle Collins lost the match in three sets. On Monday, when Dominic Thiem and Diego Schwartzman played their final US Open matches, there was a small post-match ceremony to honor them. Wimbledon did something similar for Andy Murray. This has become a common practice with this generation of retiring players.
Fans expected a small ceremony for the Florida native even though she would return for doubles later in the week. There was a bouquet on the court, but nothing happened because Collins darted off the court quickly.
Danielle Collins Does Things Her Way
Danielle Collins has legions of fans on the WTA Tour who like her. However, she has others who are less enthusiastic about her because she rubs some people the wrong way. Collins is not afraid to be outspoken and do things her way. She is never seeking a popularity award.
A recent example was at the Paris Olympics when Collins exchanged words with World No. 1 Iga Swiatek during their match. She was irritated that Swiatek kept halting play on Collins’ serve. Collins retired from the match due to suffering a heatstroke. She commented that she did not want fake sentiments for her well-being. Danielle Collins told the media after the match that she did not want that attention. She believes she had enough attention to last a lifetime.
Collins On-Court Behavior A Question
Of course, she was disappointed in the loss. She jumped out to the lead and had control of the match before things turned in the second set. Collins’ best US Open finish was in the fourth round in 2022. In front of the home crowd, the former World No. 7 should have at least taken the flowers and accepted a moment of applause. The ceremony would have been brief because another match was scheduled on the court.
The good news is that fans will see her again in ladies’ doubles. Perhaps she will be more amenable to the ceremony at that time. Collins and Garcia take the court on Wednesday for a first-round match against the all-American duo of Anna Rogers and Alana Smith. Collins and Garcia are the favorites.
Collins and Shelby Rogers Are The US Retiring Players
Collins’ early exit did not make fans happy. They wanted to see her play as long as possible in this event knowing it was her last. Fans now rest their hopes on Shelby Rogers. Rogers announced her retirement following the US Open a few days ago. Shelby Rogers is playing Jessica Pegula in Tuesday’s night session.
Unlike Danielle Collins, Rogers is not playing doubles so this is her only event. If she does not advance past the first round, will she stay on the court for a ceremony? Watch the US Open from August 26 through September 8 on ESPN. Day and night sessions will be telecast.
