New York Giants QB Daniel Jones “Not Fired Up” About Giants Considering QBs in 2024 NFL Draft

Daniel Jones "Wasn't Fired Up" About Giants Seeking a QB

While speaking to reporters on Thursday, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones expressed his disappointment in the Giants for seriously considering adding a rookie QB in the 2024 NFL Draft.  The Giants ended up deciding against drafting a quarterback, choosing instead to strengthen their defense and add to some key offensive positions.

Among these was LSU superstar WR Malik Nabers in the first round, who was the second receiver overall behind Marvin Harrison Jr. While the Giants front office continues to assert that Daniel Jones is the clear starter, there are rumblings that new hire Drew Lock will at least have a chance to take Jones’ job. However, Lock’s rocky start to open OTAs seemed to cement Daniel Jones’ role as starter, at least for now.

Daniel Jones “Looking Good”

When speaking to reporters after OTAs on Thursday, Daniel Jones and New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll both expressed approval and optimism for how things have gone in the offseason, with Daboll stating:

“He looks good. We’re not putting him in some team stuff, but he’s making progress so that’s why we got him in 7-on-7. … We’ll take it day by day and when he can do more, we’ll put him in more.”

Jones went on to express his own enthusiasm for the upcoming season and his progress so far:

“Feels good. Felt good out there today,” Jones said on Thursday. “Just getting back in the swing of things and playing football against the defense. … Thought it was good today. Continue to kind of progress. … Rehab process has been smooth up to this point, and feels good doing all that kind of stuff.”

When asked by reporters what he thought about the Giants taking a deep dive into drafting a QB in the 2024 NFL Draft, Daniel Jones said that he “wasn’t fired up about it,” but went on to express his understanding that, “it’s part of the game at this level.”

For the New York Giants to consider drafting a rookie QB in 2024 isn’t that surprising, considering Jones’ miserable 1-4 start last year, a neck injury that knocked him out from weeks 5-8, and then a season-ending ACL tear in November of 2023. Daniel Jones and his coaches say that he is recovering well, but they are still taking things easy in practice.

New York Giants Outlook for 2024

With some offensive help coming from the NFL Draft in the form of Malik Nabers (WR), Theo Johnson (TE) and Tyrone Tracy (RB), Jones should have a few more weapons in his arsenal for 2024.  However, no improvements were made for the offensive line, who clearly struggled to protect Daniel Jones last year.

With Saquon Barkley banged up and well past his prime, and a lackluster offense in general, the New York Giants will definitely need a shot in the arm to improve on their 6-11 finish from last year.  Oddsmakers currently have the over/under for Giants wins at 6.5, meaning that the bookies are betting against much improvement from the New York Giants in 2024.

Considering that the New York Giants play in one of the league’s toughest divisions, it’s higly doubtful that they will win the NFC East. However, with some great rookie play and improvement from Daniel Jones, they could surprise the doubters and take a shot at an NFC Wild Card spot.  Only time will tell.
