Daniel Cormier has briefly explained why MMA is not included in the Olympics. He had a conversation with Chael Sonnen on his podcast. We know that the Olympics that are happening in Paris include Judo, wrestling, and Karate, and they’re also having boxing. But the reality is that those sports are not a similar discipline to MMA. A lot of people are curious to know why MMA is being excluded from the Olympics.
There are many reasons to exclude MMA from the Olympics, and Daniel Cormier has explained them. However, many officials and athletes have shown high interest in seeing MMA in the Olympics. Due to its influence, we might see MMA in the Olympics in the near future.
Daniel Cormier Explains Harsh Realities
Recently, our beloved former champion Daniel Cormier showed up on a podcast by Chael Sonnen named Good Guy/Bad Guy. They talked about the Olympics and MMA and explained different aspects of the sport. Daniel Cormier, first of all, explained that the timing of the Olympics is not suitable for MMA, and there is no way that MMA can be included in the Olympics with that sort of timing. It is because, if we look at the nature of the Olympics, the athletes would have to compete in less than 48 hours.
The fighters in MMA are too skilled, but it would be difficult for them to pull off. Besides discussing the timing, they also discussed the cages for different fights. If they are going to include MMA in the Olympics, they are going to need different cages in the same area, which would be a challenge for Olympic management.
Danger of Skilled Fighters
Daniel Cormier said MMA has many skilled fighters who are masters of different styles and moves. The Olympics would have to ban several kicks and punches. For instance, it would have to ban certain leg moves, especially elbows. UFC and PFL deal with different injuries to fighters, and in some cases, there are serious injuries that they have to manage as soon as possible.
“It’s not just because of logistics. The guys are just too good. They’re too skilled, and I don’t believe that there is a safe way to have the sport that we view as MMA in the Olympics. To see that in a tournament format with 24 guys, you go through four guys in one week. I don’t think it’s right.” Daniel Cormier said.
Dana White’s Remarks on the Olympics
Dana White is looking forward to including MMA in the Olympics. But Dana White does not have the authority to do that. Dana was asked about the Olympics, including MMA, in 2022, and the answer was quite different from that of Daniel Cormier. He is interested in having MMA in the Olympics and would work for that, too, but for now, it’s not his job to do that. “I think it should be an Olympic sport already. It’s not my job. It’s not what I’m looking to do. I’m not pushing to turn this thing into an Olympic sport. I agree with whoever said that, yes. Do you want viewers? Put MMA in the Olympics.”
Great champions like Ronda Rousey and Henry Cejudo achieved a lot in MMA, and they were also medal holders in the Olympics. This makes it easier for the officials to understand and implement the process of including MMA in the Olympics. What do you think about seeing MMA in the Olympics?
