Dan Towriss, longtime partner and investor, is set to fully take over operations at Andretti Global after owner Michael Andretti, son of 109-time career winner Mario Andretti and father of 4-time national championship winner Marco Andretti, has decided to step down. The most successful racer in IndyCar history announced that he’d no longer serve as the head of the racing team. However, Andretti will not be walking away entirely and plans to serve as an ambassador and advisor for Andretti Global, giving the 62-year-old some well-deserved relaxation.
Why Andretti Is Stepping Down
Andretti’s decision to resign came shortly after a request was made to enter Andretti Global in Formula 1 for the 2025-26 seasons and was rejected. Andretti felt defeated, and the denial ultimately led to his departure from ownership. Michael Andretti became a team owner in 2002, and under his 20-year leadership, his team pulled 70 wins, six of which came from the iconic Indianapolis 500, but all good things must end.
Now it’s time for the Indy icon to step into a more conventional role as an advisor with Andretti Global, but he’ll still attend global races. He’s been in an ownership role since retiring from 17 years on the track. He is ready to become more of a family man and spend more time with his wife, Jodi, and his two youngest children, 10-year-old twins Mario and Mia.
Michael Andretti also became a grandfather to Marco’s son and wife Billie Jo Power’s daughter Miura, born on September 17. He feels there are so many more years left to meet more accomplishments, but as for now, he’s feeling pretty fulfilled with what he’s accomplished as an IndyCar owner already. Now, it’s officially time for him to hand over the reins after three months of preparations. “We’ve been working on this for a few months now.” “For me where I am in my life and what I want to do, the timing was right for me to take a little different role with the team,” Andretti mentioned.
What Dan Towriss Brings To the Table
With the dream of Andretti Global joining the Formula 1 World Championship on the back burner, the team rests in the hands of Dan Towriss, CEO of the Zionsville Indiana insurance and financial services company Group 1001. In recent months, the long-time investor and Michael Andretti have worked together to decide how to restructure under Towriss’ leadership.
Dan Towriss initially emerged as a contributor in IndyCar’s NTT Series in 2018, sponsoring Zach Veach with sponsor Gainbridge and his company, Group 1001, when the team was still Andretti Autosport. Since investing his stake in the company, he’s been able to take it to a whole other level, spanning many disciplines, including IMSA, Formula E, and Indy NXT.
Towriss and Gainbridge are responsible for sponsoring stakes in NASCAR and Andretti Global’s lineup featuring Colton Herta and Marcus Ericsson, so there’s no questioning why Michael Andretti has chosen the investor to take over completely. He’s excited to see the team’s growth under new leadership, even though Towriss won’t be a heavy component for day-to-day operations, and plans to keep original leadership in place.
Final Thoughts
Dan Towriss has big shoes to fill as he prepares to take control of Andretti Global, but he plans to keep Michael Andretti as involved as possible in the NTT Series operation. It will be interesting to see if he’ll finally be able to make a successful push into Formula 1 after it’s speculated Andretti walked away from his empire due to the recent rejection. Whatever the case, the number five all-time winner won’t be walking away completely, as he plans to remain an advisor with Andretti Global.
