The Dallas Wings won big in the 2025 WNBA Draft Lottery, presented by State Farm, on Sunday, November 17, on ESPN. The Wings, who play in the WNBA’s Western Conference, secured the No. 1 pick and are positioning themselves to select Uconn Huskies women’s basketball point guard Paige Bueckers. Bueckers, 23, is an Edina, Minnesota, native who played high school girl’s basketball at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minn., before matriculating to college.

The Wings’ No. 1 pick — and the other 12  teams’ picks — will be selected in the 2025 WNBA Draft, presented by State Farm, on Monday, April 14, 2025. But, in the meantime, Dallas is excited about the right to select Bueckers, who was the AP Player of the Year, Naismith College Player of the Year, USBWA National Player of the Year, and John R. Wooden Award recipient — all in 2021. Read on for further details about the Wings’ big win and more.

Dallas Wings Win Big

The Dallas Wings won big in the draft lottery for the first selection of the 2025 WNBA Draft. Previously, Dallas missed the 2024 playoffs after a 9-31 record under first-year head coach Latricia Trammell. Trammell, 56, was fired after the 2024 season. Trammell’s firing was part of the Wings’ front office restructuring, including hiring a General Manager.

The Wings hired Curt Miller as the GM and Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. Miller, 56, arrived in Dallas, Texas, after spending two years in Los Angeles, California, as the Los Angeles Sparks’ head coach. Miller has a tall order to fulfill, but he might manage to help the Wings out. We’ll keep tabs on Miller and the Wings in the coming months. The Wings received the No. 1 pick because of the team’s two-year cumulative records in 2023 and 2024, respectively. The Wings’ records were 22-18 in 2023 and 9-31 in 2024.

Chicago Sky Suffer a Loss

The Chicago Sky suffered a loss in the 2025 WNBA Draft. The Sky couldn’t come away with the No. 1 overall draft pick. Even if the Sky came away with the No. 1 pick, the pick would’ve gone to the Wings. Additionally, Chicago has never had the No. 1 pick in franchise history since its inception in 2005 and settled for the No. 3 pick for the second consecutive year.

The Sky has one of the biggest WNBA stars in Power Forward, Angel Reese. Reese, 22, was selected with the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2024 draft. Reese’s college basketball career was played at Maryland from 2020 to 2022 and LSU from 2022 to 2024. Reese is a native of Randallstown, Maryland, who attended the Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore, Md.

Dallas Wings’ Potential Rival

The Dallas Wings’ potential rival could be the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks ended the 2023 and 2024 WNBA seasons with a cumulative 22-55 record under head coach Curt Miller. As mentioned, Miller parted ways with the Sparks and joined the Wings after the former missed the playoffs for two consecutive years. The Sparks’ No. 2 overall draft pick will be selected at the 2025 NBA Draft. And, when it comes to all-time records, Dallas leads Los Angeles 2-1 in the postseason, but LA leads the Wings 47-32 in the regular season.

The Sparks’ No.
2 pick was somewhat surprising, as the team had the best chance of landing the No. 1 pick at 44.2% with a cumulative 22-55 record over two years. The Wings and Sky had a 22.7% chance at the No. 1 pick. Paige Bueckers is projected to be the headliner of the 2025 WNBA Draft, but the draft will be deep with backcourt prospects for the remaining WNBA teams.
