Dallas Wings 40-18 Final Quarter Surge Bamboozles LA Sparks

Dallas Wings

The College Park Center in Arlington, Texas witnessed an epic high-scoring encounter between the Dallas Wings and the Los Angeles Sparks. To the delight of the home crowd, it was their team who came out victorious 113-110, turning a nightmare visit for the Sparks. This was when the away team led for the most minutes of the game but eventually succumbed to the pressure from the home team and lost. A late heavy Dallas surge in the fourth quarter witnessed one of the best comebacks of the 2024 WNBA season and the contest probably turned out to be the ‘game of the season’ so far.

With this win, the Dallas Wings are now 7-22 for the season, 11th in the table whereas Los Angeles finds itself 6-24 and 12th (bottom) of the standings. Let’s take a look at how the miracle unfolded at the College Park Center on August 25.

Sparks Build Huge Momentum in First Half

Contrary to what many expected, the away team, the Sparks, literally set the ball rolling in the first half. The team totally dominated the Dallas Wings in the first half, scored twice as many points as the home team, and finished the quarter 26-13.  Forward Rickea Jackson opened the scoring for Los Angeles, securing the first eight points for her team, already setting the tone. Diarica Hamby added another four points to the team’s total before Jackson took over again. She finished the quarter with a massive 16 points before heading to the bench. The electric start from the away team pushed the Wings to the backfoot.

The second quarter saw the two teams equally having a go at each other. Points after points, it was a high-scoring fest on the court. For the Dallas Wings, Natasha Howard and guard Arike Ogunbowale stepped up and matched toe-to-toe with the Sparks. By the end of the first half, Howard finished with 12 points while Ogunbowale had 15 to her name. The second quarter finished with a huge 32-29 score in favor of the home team. The two teams headed for the halftime break with the Los Angeles Sparks leading 55-45.

Dallas Wings 19 Points Behind After Third

The start of the third quarter wasn’t ideal for the home team. The Dallas Wings looked dejected, low on energy, and unable to cope with the Sparks’ rhythm. Hamby, just like in the first quarter, opened the scoring for the Sparks, quickly putting up six points. A group effort from Odyssey Sims, Azura Stevens, and Jackson led the away team to 37 points in the third quarter. On the other hand, they restricted the Wings to 28, further increasing the lead in the game to 19 points.

At the end of the third quarter, the total score reached 92-73 in favor of the Sparks with the Wings having only 10 minutes to save the day.

What everyone saw at the College Park Center in the fourth quarter was nothing short of a miracle. Despite being down 19 points, the Wings found something from somewhere and created a memory for their fans. Satou Sabally started the final 10 minutes for the home team, scoring free throws and taking layups. Moreover, everyone from the starting five, including Howard, Ogunbowale, and Teaira McCowan produced big numbers in the fightback. They brought the lead back to only 10 with only 3.22 remaining, putting the Sparks under tremendous pressure.

Howard’s running layup cut the lead to only three when only 1.4 remained on the clock. Los Angeles Sparks’ Stevens made the biggest error of the game and gave an offensive foul when 50 seconds were left. This created a perfect opportunity for the Dallas Wings to 109-109, and they did with 41 seconds left. Sims missed a layup for the Sparks, giving Dallas to take the lead for the first time in the game. With seven seconds left, Wings’ McCowen scored a putback layup, giving the home team the lead.

With dying moments in the game, it all ended with fouls and free throws on both sides. Eventually, the Dallas Wings came out victorious 113-110, marking the season’s best game so far. Howard and Ogunbowale made the biggest difference, finishing with 33 and 30 points, respectively.
