Dallas Stars 2024-2025 Season Preview

The Dallas Stars gear up for the start of the season.

The Dallas Stars are coming off back-to-back trips to the Western Conference Finals and this upcoming season feels like, it could be their turn to hoist the Stanley Cup. This roster is loaded with talent and it’s hard to find a weakness anywhere from top to bottom.

Head Coach Pete DeBoer is in his third season with the Stars and has brought his winning pedigree with him. Although he hasn’t won a championship yet, he has been to the Stanley Cup Finals twice and numerous Conference Finals. The opportunity is there for the taking and this team is hungry for their first Stanley Cup since the 1998-1999 season.

Dallas Stars Offseason Additions and Departures

It was a quiet offseason for the Dallas Stars, who decided to run it back with mostly the same roster for this upcoming season. They signed D Matt Dumba to a two-year deal, D Thomas Harley to a two-year contract, and reached a five-year extension with D Esa Lindell to fortify the blue line. The Dallas Stars believe that the roster as currently constructed is a Stanley Cup contender in the Western Conference.

The Stars had a few notable departures from last year’s roster by trades, buyouts, and retirement. They traded C Ty Dellandrea, D Christopher Tanev, and C Radek Faksa for draft picks and future considerations. They bought out the contract of D Ryan Suter and lost a future Hall of Fame center Joe Pavelski to retirement after 18 seasons. Pavelski spent the last five seasons with Dallas and in the past three, played all 82 games. His leadership and toughness will be missed this upcoming season.

Preseason Recap

The Dallas Stars picked up right where they left off last season and looked fantastic in the preseason. They lost only one game in the preseason, an overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues. The Stars added convincing wins over the Colorado Avalanche and the Minnesota Wild to round out their impressive preseason performance. Their offense averaged 3.5 goals per game while excellent goaltending allowed only two goals per game.

The Stars’ goal-scoring came from several different players but one player that stood out was C Logan Stankoven. He popped up in the scoresheet in almost every game in the preseason. He is only 21 years old and looks to take a step in his development and give the Stars another scoring threat. Jake Oettinger and Casey DeSmith could be arguably the best goalie tandem in the league this upcoming season. They looked sharp in the preseason and will look to build off their performance when the puck drops on October 10.

Line Combinations And Players To Watch

The Dallas Stars’ first line should be lethal again in 2024-2025 with Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, and Wyatt Johnston. All three players tallied at least 65 points last season with the potential for more. The second line of Mason Marchment, Matt Duchene, and Tyler Seguin has great chemistry and will be leaned upon when the first line isn’t clicking.

The top defensive pairing is projected to be Miro Heiskanen and free agent signing Matt Dumba. Dumba has always been known for his offensive skillset, so it will be interesting to see how much of the slack Heiskanen will have to pick up if he struggles. Jake Oettinger was an All-Star for the first time in his career last season and now has his eyes set on winning the Vezina Trophy. The Stars have all the pieces in place to make a deep run in playoffs again and finally get over the hump and advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Final Thoughts

It will take a collective effort by the Dallas Stars to push the proverbial rock back up the hill and return to the Western Conference Finals. However, the Colorado Avalanche and Edmonton Oilers will be right there with their own Stanley Cup aspirations. The championship window is wide open in Dallas and if the young superstars can continue their excellent production while the veterans stay healthy, this team can beat anyone.

Dallas Stars fans deserve a championship run in 2024-2025. Jamie Benn has been through numerous playoff runs with this team and has fallen short time after time. With an incredible power play unit, unparalleled leadership, and high-quality coaching, the Dallas Stars have all the intangibles to be champions this season.
