Dallas Mavericks vs. Miami Heat Summer League Preview | July 17, 2024

Spencer Dinwiddie Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks Summer League team is hoping to break out after losing their first two matches as they face the Miami Heat at the Thomas and Mack Center. The Heat currently have a winning record of 2-0, while the Mavs are 0-2

The Dallas Mavericks team has been struggling since the NBA 2K25 Summer League exhibit commenced. The Mavs team lost with a 20-point margin against the Memphis Grizzlies (88-108). Also, the franchise’s second-round rookie lost his touch against the Memphis Grizzlies dominant defense. In general, the Mavs team performance throughout the game was nothing to write home about as the Grizzlies dominated the floor.

The Miami Heat proved strong against the Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder to go 2-0 in two games. Now, the Heat’s last match against the OKC Thunder was stellar, as they won with a 29-point margin (102-73). Thus, the Mavericks might not have a chance against the Heat, given the past performance of the former team. Also, the Heat’s 2024 No. 15 overall draft pick should perform better against the Dallas Mavericks with this unique skill that he brings to the court. Thus, how could the Dallas Mavericks clinch their first win in this 2K25 Summer League?

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks fell short in their performance against the Memphis Grizzlies after a competitive loss in their debut game against the Utah Jazz. Melvin Ajinca, the Mavericks’ 2024 second-round overall pick, couldn’t find his footing against the Grizzlies despite having a decent performance against the Jazz. The Mavs forward got five points and two rebounds with 20% in field goals (1-of-5) and 0-of-4 three-point attempts. Ajinca should improve against the Heat. However, the probability of his offensive play outshining the Heat’s defense is slim as he struggled with making 61.5% of his field goal attempts in his debut game against the Utah Jazz.

Oliver Maxence-Prosper led the Mavericks team in performance as he got 16 points, four assists, and four rebounds. Also, the Mavs forward made 42.9% of his field goals and defensively, he could grab two steals. However, to beat a dominant team like the Miami Heat, Oliver should improve his field goals and make more three-point attempts. Also, Emanuel Miller came off the bench for 27 minutes to score 12 points, grab six rebounds, and four steals with 5-of-9 in field goals. Thus, he should make a fine 6th player for the Mavericks team against the Heat.

Miami Heat

Since the Heat participated in the California Classic Summer League games, it’s no surprise that the team dominated in their debut and second game. Kel’el Ware displayed a bit of a 3-and-D performance after clinching a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds with one block and a steal. Offensively, the Heat center made 41.7% in field goals (5-of-12) and 1-of-2 three-pointers. Thus, Ware could do better against the Mavericks on both sides of the court.

Jamie Jaquez Jr. came out on top in performance as he got 23 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. The Heat guard was active on both ends of the court and also displayed a 3-and-D performance on the court. Jamie could make 62% of his field goal attempts (8-of-13) and 3-of-5 in three-pointers. Shooting guard Josh Christopher came off the bench for 21 minutes to become the team’s second-best as he got 23 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Christopher’s shooting ability was stellar as he made 72.7% of his field goal attempts (8-of-11) and 75% of his three-pointers (6-of-8).

Possible Breakout Player of the Game

Dallas Mavericks

A.J. Lawson remains consistent as one of the team’s best performers. The Mavs guard got 14 points and two rebounds, making 40% in field goals and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe. Though he declined in performance from his debut summer league game, Lawson could break out against the Miami Heat.

Miami Heat

The two-way contract player, Isaiah Stevens also came off the bench for 21 mins, yet he wasn’t as good as Josh Christopher. He should be a player to watch out for against the Mavericks. Stevens got nine points, seven assists, and two rebounds, making 3-of-5 field goals and 3-of-3 three-pointers with +22 in +/-.
