Dallas Mavericks’ Spencer Dinwiddie Is a Versatile Guard

Spencer Dinwiddie has done a bit of everything this season for the Dallas Mavericks.

The Dallas Mavericks’ Spencer Dinwiddie is a versatile guard. Dinwiddie, 31, returned to Dallas, Texas, this summer for his second stint with the team. Dinwiddie’s previous stint in Dallas lasted from 2022 to 2023. The Los Angeles, California, native scored a season-high 36 points, along with six rebounds and nine assists, in the Mavericks’ 99-95 win over the Phoenix Suns on January 26, 2023.

Dinwiddie is a player who has played most, if not all, roles in the league. He has been a 15th man who fought for a roster spot. He has been a rotation player. He has been a No. 2 option who was asked to score many points. Read on for Dinwiddie’s current versatility as a point and shooting guard, respectively.

Spencer Dinwiddie Is Versatile

Spencer Dinwiddie is a combo guard with the skills and abilities of both a point guard and a shooting guard. Dinwiddie’s versatility makes him an ideal veteran guard. Dinwiddie has been asked to play several roles and he has shown that he’s capable of all the roles.

On Saturday, Dinwiddie told Mavs.com about his current role with the Dallas Mavericks, “To be honest, we’re figuring it out at the moment … I’ve been first off the bench some games and I’ve been told I wasn’t going to play some games. It’s early and we’re figuring all that out. I look forward to helping anyway I can.”

Spencer Dinwiddie’s statement to Mavs.com was perfectly understandable, as Dinwiddie has played for several teams in the NBA between 2014 and 2024. The Colorado men’s basketball alum has been described as a journeyman, but he has been appearing to improve his game, including his defensive skills, over the years.

Dinwiddie In Second Rodeo

Spencer Dinwiddie is in his second rodeo with the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas, Texas. Dinwiddie’s first rodeo with the Mavericks in Dallas was in the 2022-23 NBA season, where he scored a season-high 36 points in the Mavericks’ 114-113 win over the Sacramento Kings on March 5, 2022.

So far this season, Spencer Dinwiddie has seen all sorts of usage, including non-usage. Dinwiddie’s role was trivial in the Mavericks’ first two games of the 2024-25 NBA season, but he has averaged six points and 18 minutes of play in the team’s last three games and also hit 3 three-pointers last Monday. Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd told Mavs.com, “You need those type of guys on your team to be able to adjust to a role on the fly and he’s one of those guys that can do that … He’s doing that for us at a high level right now.”

Dinwiddie’s History

Spencer Dinwiddie’s history helps give Kidd plenty of options on how to utilize the former second-round pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Dinwiddie’s versatile skill set can give Mavericks fans a glimpse of a different style of play. Dinwiddie explained to Mavs.com, “I think the benefit of wearing all those hats is you have a very versatile skill set … Some games it’s going to be: hey, we need you to guard Jalen Green. And some games it’s going to be: we’re going to let you hit three threes against the Jazz.

“So it’s probably going to be a little different from what Maverick fans are used to seeing. Last time I was here, it was like: here’s the ball – go. That was what Maverick fans have seen so far. But I’m looking forward to settling into whatever the team needs on a consistent basis.”

Spencer Dinwiddie may not receive a contract extension next year, but for the time being, Dinwiddie’s services can help the Mavericks in more ways than one — and Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd makes his rather unpredictable job easier to handle.
