The Dallas Mavericks’ controversial play sparked discussions among NBA fans and media members alike.

After some time, the NBA announced a rule change on Tuesday. The NBA’s announcement touched on what could change an out-of-bounds call in a review. It referenced Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals between the Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves.

ESPN’s Tim Bontemps posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Under the new rules, instant replay on an out-of-bounds play can cover whether a foul should’ve been called on the play, with the NBA referring in its announcement to a play when Kyrie Irving fouled Jaden McDaniels but Dallas got the ball. Now, a foul would be called instead.”

Bontemps’ post on X summed up the NBA’s announcement, as an instant replay on an out-of-bounds play can cover whether a foul should’ve been called on the play.

The Replay Review’s Determination

In the final minute of Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, the Minnesota Timberwolves were up by two, and Jaden McDaniels lost control of a ball that went out of bounds. It was initially called out on Kyrie Irving, so Jason Kidd challenged the call after Irving pleaded for some help.

The replay determined that the ball last went off of McDaniels because Irving made contact with McDaniels’ arm and not the ball, so the Mavericks got the ball back. This would now be overturned to a foul, which in some situations late in the game would lead to free throws if a team is in the bonus. The Timberwolves weren’t in the bonus, so it would’ve been a normal, non-shooting foul.

The Dallas Mavericks’ Differential

The Dallas Mavericks’ differential could’ve ended differently if the NBA’s new rule had been in effect during the 2024 Western Conference Finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Without that call, Luka Doncic hit an iconic game-winner over Rudy Gobert 40 seconds later. The Mavericks then took a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Timberwolves following back-to-back wins at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Mavericks missed out on the initial opportunity after the out-of-bounds call. Kyle Anderson missed a shot on the other end, which set up this shot.
