The Dallas Mavericks reportedly signed Jamarion Sharp, the tallest college basketball player at 7-foot-5, on Friday. Sharp, 22, is coming off a solid season playing college basketball for the Ole Miss Rebels. The 235-lb center’s averages were 3.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per contest while shooting 59.4% from the field in 31 games (and 15 starts).
Chris Hayes first reported the news on Friday. Sharp will sign with the Mavericks after agreeing to a one-year deal, Sharp’s agent, Scott Nichols of Rize Management, told NBA on TNT and the Bleacher Report. Sharp played three seasons of college basketball for Ole Miss, Western Kentucky, and John A. Logan. His career averages were 6.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game while shooting 66.4% from the field in 95 games.
The big man played for the Mavericks during the NBA 2K25 Summer League games in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now, Sharp’s heading to Dallas, Texas, to begin what will hopefully be a great NBA career. Read on for further details surrounding the tallest college basketball player and how the Mavericks can develop him.
The Lowdown on Jamarion Sharp
Born on August 26, 2001, to Mario Sharp and Shiby Watkins, Jamarion Sharp will turn 23 later this month. But, unlike most other professional basketball players, Sharp reportedly didn’t love the game of basketball growing up. But his future high school basketball coach, Tim Haworth, encouraged him to play basketball at Hopkinsville High School in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
Sharp entered high school as a 6-foot-6 freshman following a growth spurt in the summer after his middle school graduation. He appeared in the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen state tournament as a sophomore. He led the Hopkinsville Tigers to a 16-14 record and an eight district semifinals appearance as a senior. He was then selected to represent Team Kentucky in the 2019 Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Game.
Jamarion Sharp’s College Basketball Success
After high school, Jamarion Sharp achieved college basketball success at three different colleges. Sharp entered John A. Logan as a 7-foot-2 freshman in 2019 and earned both All-GRAC and All-Region honors. He grew to 7-foot-5 upon arrival at Western Kentucky in 2021 and finished as a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award, along with a finalist for the Lefty Driesell Award. He played at Ole Miss from 2023-24.
The center’s one-year stint at Ole Miss wasn’t smooth sailing, as he was accused of firing shots while his vehicle was allegedly being repossessed. No one was injured or killed in the incident, and Sharp was taken into custody. A municipal court judge charged him with aggravated assault and gave him a $100,000 bond. However, he appears to have turned his life around, and can succeed as one of the newest members of the Dallas Mavericks.
Jamarion Sharp’s Possible Potential in Dallas
Chances are, the Dallas Mavericks saw the possible potential in Jamarion Sharp. He’s an intriguing player that the Mavericks will develop in the near future. The 22-year-old may or may not make the roster in the 2024 training camp. But if his contract contains Exhibit 10 language, he’ll have the opportunity to earn a bonus of up to $77,500 as long he stays with the Mavericks’ NBA G-League affiliate, the Texas Legends, for at least 60 days.
