Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall To Retire After 2024-25

Dallas Mavericks CEO announced her retirement.

Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall will retire after the 2024-25 NBA season. Marshall, 64, will remain the CEO until December 31, 2024, and then stay as a consultant until December 2025. Former majority Owner Mark Cuban hired her after allegations of sexual harassment throughout the Mavericks organization were made public. Cuban described his decision to hire her as one of the smartest decisions in his career.

Marshall was born in Birmingham, Alabama, but her family escaped the Jim Crow South when she was three months old and moved to Richmond, California. She grew up in public housing projects because her family struggled to pay the bills. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and worked as a supervisor at AT&T before taking on executive roles. Here’s what you need to know about Marshall’s upcoming retirement.

Cynt Marshall’s Leadership For Dallas Mavericks

Cynt Marshall’s leadership for the Dallas Mavericks was useful and also influential. Marshall’s leadership turned a toxic Mavericks organization around for the better. Marshall joined the Mavericks in March 2018 and became the first Black female CEO in NBA history.

The Mavericks said in a news release obtained by FOX 4, “Under Cynt’s leadership, the organization built a foundation of trust, and fostered a culture rooted in transparency, respect, and accountability … Her dedication to creating a more equitable workplace has garnered national attention and established the Mavericks as a role model for businesses across the sports industry and beyond.”

Marshall also influenced others during her college years at Cal. She was one of the Golden Bears’ first African American cheerleaders during the late 1970s. She reportedly turned to prayer when Cal fans spewed negativity about her as a cheerleader on the football field. She graduated from Cal at age 21 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and human resources management.

Cynt Marshall’s Efforts to Strengthen Dallas Mavericks

Cynt Marshall’s efforts strengthened the Dallas Mavericks on and off the basketball court since she joined the Mavericks in the spring of 2018. Marshall’s efforts transformed the overall reputation and image of the Mavericks organization to regain the attention and trust of fans, employees, and media members.

In the past, the Mavericks organization credited Marshall’s efforts to increase the Mavericks’ connection to the local community and also the formation of the Girls Empowered by Mavericks program, which encourages young girls and women to be physically active every day or nearly every day.

Mavericks’ Latest Change

The Dallas Mavericks’ latest change came with a question mark. Cynt Marshall’s departure reportedly came without a reason. Marshall’s departure came just one year after Mark Cuban sold the majority stake to Miriam Adelson and her son-in-law Patrick Dumont.

Dumont said in a news release obtained by NBC DFW, “Cynt Marshall is a force of nature … I like to say her superpower is bringing people together, but the truth is she has many superpowers. Cynt has always gone above and beyond in everything she has done, and her leadership of the Dallas Mavericks is no exception. She is an indelible fixture in the history of this franchise, and we are eternally grateful. The positive impact she has had here will be felt for a very long time.”
