Dallas Mavericks Might Cut Ties With These 3 Players

The Boston Celtics halted the Dallas Mavericks’ Cinderella story with a 106-88 blowout win in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The Celtics eliminated the Mavericks in five games, but the latter had a lot to be proud of this past season.

Right now, Dallas has to hopefully build off of this year’s heartbreaking loss in the 2024 NBA Finals and make some improvements in the 2024 NBA offseason. The Mavericks might cut ties with these three players, starting with Australian shooting guard and small forward Josh Green. Read on for all three players and why they might get cut shortly.

Josh Green Might be on his Way out of the Dallas Mavericks

Josh Green, 23, has been a member of the Dallas Mavericks since 2020. Green was drafted with the 18th overall pick by the Mavericks at the 2020 NBA Draft. The Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, native signed a rookie scale contract with the Mavericks on November 30, 2020, and later received his first NBA G League assignment with the Salt Lake City Stars on February 18, 2021.

As you can see, Green’s contract can be described as tradeable with a high upside. Green is arguably a good shooter who can provide a solid defense, but his inconsistency can outweigh the positives. The Australian big man signed a three-year, $41 million contract extension with the Mavericks on October 23, 2023, and helped the Mavericks advance to the 2024 NBA Finals, but he can’t seem to string together back-to-back 20-point performances. In addition, he’s an injury-prone player who has suffered several ankle and elbow injuries in the past two seasons.

Dante Exum

Dallas Mavs

Dante Exum, 28, has been a member of the Dallas Mavericks since 2023. Exum was originally drafted with the fifth overall pick by the Utah Jazz at the 2014 NBA Draft. The Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, native spent five years with the Jazz before stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, FC Barcelona, and Partizan NIS Belgrade.

Exum signed with the Mavericks on July 14, 2023. The Australian big man made his Mavericks debut on October 25, 2023, in a 129-119 over the San Antonio Spurs at the Frost Bank Center. However, Exum’s regular-season struggles carried over into the postseason, despite how he had several clutch moments during the regular season.

Exum might’ve been a solid bench player and starter for that matter, but he can’t be trusted most of the time. Exum’s on-and-off success might make him a trade piece for an NBA team looking for a backup point guard.

Tim Hardaway Jr.

Tim Hardaway Jr., 32, has been with the Dallas Mavericks since 2019. The Alameda, California-born and Miami, Florida-bred small forward and shooting guard was originally drafted with the 24th overall pick by the New York Knicks at the 2013 NBA Draft.

Tim Hardaway Jr. is the son of former NBA All-Star Tim Hardaway Sr. However, Hardaway Jr. isn’t all that and a bag of chips. The American big man was a rather hot topic in the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award conversation at the start of the 2023-2024 NBA season but later suffered a disappointing shooting slump that might’ve overshadowed his handful of postseason performances.

The Mavericks might trade Hardaway Jr. to another NBA team this time around. Therefore, the offseason trades for the Mavs stand equally important if it needs to boost up its roster.
