Dallas Cowboys Set To Work Out 4 Edge Rushers On Thursday

Micah Parsons, Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Cowboys are already scrambling to fill some roster holes. After third-year defensive end Sam Williams tore his ACL earlier this week, the team is left in need of a pass-rusher. If there is a silver lining, it is that they have plenty of time to integrate this player into their defense since the season is still over a month away. There are plenty of great veteran options out there, and the Cowboys are bringing in four players for a workout on Thursday.

The most prominent name the Dallas Cowboys will work out is defensive end Carl Lawson. Lawson spent four years with the Bengals before heading to the New York Jets for three years. During his time in Cincinnati, he played under defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. The 29-year-old edge rusher struggled with injuries in 2023 but had a strong 2022 campaign. He started all 17 games and racked up seven sacks for a suffocating Jets defense. In his career, Lawson has 27 total sacks.

Lawson isn’t the only one who will be coming in for a workout. Shaka Toney, a third-year player out of Penn State, will also work out for the Dallas Cowboys. He spent two years with the Washington Commanders, appearing in 26 games. Al-Quadin Muhammad did not play in 2023 but showed promise as a quality edge rusher for the Colts. Finally, the Cowboys will bring in another veteran, Justin Hollins, who played for the Packers and Rams last season. They are doing their due diligence in trying to find a piece for their pass rush rotation.

Micah Parsons Needs Help

Micah Parsons is one of the premier edge rushers in the NFL. If not for TJ Watt and Myles Garrett, he would likely be the favorite for Defensive Player of the Year. However, many have knocked Parsons for failing to show up in big games. While some of this is on the superstar player, some of this is on the team construction. Opposing teams have no issue double or triple-teaming him because there is no one else to make them pay. This is part of the reason Sam Williams was so valuable. He had the ability to make teams think twice about leaving him one-on-one.

The defense especially needs to find their groove again. After starting out the 2023 season in dominant fashion, they couldn’t stop anyone, especially in the playoffs. It helps that Trevon Diggs will be back from his ACL injury, but it will take more than him to shut down opposing offenses. The Dallas Cowboys are at their best when playing balanced football. The offense has shown they have what it takes, but the defense still has a lot to prove. It will be interesting to see if any of the players coming in tomorrow end up on the roster, at least for training camp.
