Dallas Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson Suffers Bone Bruise and MCL Sprain

Jake Ferguson, Dallas Cowboys

A stellar performance by the Dallas Cowboys in beating the Cleveland Browns 33-17 has been thrown a wet blanket with an injury to Tight End Jake Ferguson. Ferguson had a knee injury that had put his availability in question for the Cowboys’ next game against the New Orleans Saints. MRIs taken have confirmed a bone bruise and slight MCL sprain in his left knee, but it’s still not all bad news for a possible Sunday appearance by the tight end.

The injury to Ferguson happened in the third quarter of the game, where he made a 2-yard catch and fell awkwardly when trying to leap over the Linebacker Jordan Hicks. This weird fall brought him down, clutching his knee in pain. He went into the locker room and did not return to the field, causing concern among fans and teammates alike.

A subsequent MRI did show that the ACL in Ferguson’s knee is intact, which works out well for him. The major problems include a bone bruise and a slight MCL sprain. This kind of diagnosis implies that although Ferguson’s injury is painful and requires rest, it is not as serious as it could have been. Full clarity on the actual recovery time for him will be better seen with time.

Ferguson had an important place in the Cowboys’ offense last season, having 71 receptions for 761 yards and scoring five touchdowns. He even made it to the Pro Bowl replacement due to his great performance. Losing him would affect the team’s offense somewhat since he was able to build a rhythm with Quarterback Dak Prescott.

Dallas Cowboys Backup Tight Ends

If Ferguson cannot play, then Dallas has a few tight end replacements: 2023 second-round picks Luke Schoonmaker, Brevyn Spann-Ford, and John Stephens Jr. Hunter Luepke was deployed as an on-the-line blocker in the game against the Browns but typically lines up as a fullback. The backups are less experienced but will have to perform in case Ferguson is ruled out.

Ferguson’s status could dramatically alter the game plan for the Cowboys. The backup tight ends have combined for a mere 13 career receptions for 101 yards, a far cry from Ferguson’s total. The coaches will have to find ways to be productive with these players and ensure the offense keeps putting up numbers.

The Cowboys, therefore, will proceed with caution in evaluating his recovery and wait until he is ready to go against the New Orleans Saints. If unable, they will fall back on their backups and perhaps use this as a time to shift strategically into new dimensions of their offense. The focus will be on maintaining performance and continuing their winning momentum.

Conclusion

The injury of Jake Ferguson does pose a big problem for the Cowboys, but it may not be that big after all. Diagnosed with a bruise and a slight MCL sprain, how long it takes for him to recover will be very important in determining his availability for subsequent games. How well the Cowboys can adjust with backup players and with the leadership of Dak Prescott is very important in moving on with their season.
