Dallas Cowboys Embrace Facial Recognition for Fan Safety

What a win! Can you imagine walking into a stadium and being able to get through security with just a glance? That’s part of the future the Dallas Cowboys are making closer to reality through their new facial recognition technology. This modern move is part of the wider NFL drive to improve security and efficiency at all teams and stadiums.

With the football season inching closer, the Cowboys set the pace for facial recognition integration into their operations. NFL teams this year will go in with advanced technology to verify the identities of credentialed individuals. Be it a media member, team staff, or a vendor, everyone will have their face act like their ticket to get them through the stadium doors.

Facial recognition was tested in the NFL last year under a system called “Express Entry” by Verizon and Wicket, a software startup. During a test run, the credentialed were required to preregister their facial scans. Due to the combination of facial recognition and security scanners, the credentialed would then easily gain access to stadiums.

Next Generation Access Control

This was such a huge success. According to Jeff Boehm, Wicket COO, the facial recognition software will now be used league-wide. The idea is to make sure that only people with proper credentials can access areas such as the press box and locker rooms, all the way down to the field level. This new system will both streamline and secure entry.

Facial recognition software works in tandem with existing accreditation software. When credential holders check in, their selfies are matched in real-time against photos stored in the system, ensuring that every person getting into restricted areas is very well-identified and authorized.

More Safety and Accountability

The new technology aims to increase accountability. According to Billy Langenstein, the NFL’s senior director of security services, it ensures that everybody who goes into games is credentialed and tracked. In this pursuit of accountability lies what helps teams and the league keep standards at a high level for safety and security.

The NFL has moved toward greater facial recognition technology and further tightening the security of stadiums. To the Cowboys, this and other teams are much more than just a tech upgrade; they’re embracing the future and making sure operations go smoothly.

What It Means for Fans and Staff

This will provide both fans and staff with an easier time during games. While most of the technology impacts credentialed personnel, its success could pave the way for future improvements that reach others. In the future, this new innovative approach could be what finally changes the way security and access are both thought of and handled within a sports venue.

The Cowboys will be implementing facial recognition, yet another way technology is changing our interaction with our favorite sports. This development is exciting; it promises security and efficiency on game days.
