Dallas Cowboys: Analyst Calls Cornerback Duo The Best In The League

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have taken a lot of heat for their lack of offseason moves. However, part of the reason for the lack of moves is the amount of talent already on the roster. Looking at the depth chart, there are many players who are in the top five in the NFL at their position. According to one analyst, the Cowboys have the top cornerback duo in the league, Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland.

Dallas Cowboys Top Cornerback Duo

Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report ranked the top ten cornerback duos in the league. He had the Dallas Cowboys duo of Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland as the NFL’s best, ranking right ahead of Cleveland’s Martin Emerson Jr. and Denzel Ward. Moton’s point is very simple. These two players create turnovers at a historic pace. While Diggs missed last year because of an ACL injury, his previous two years speak for themselves.

In 2021, Diggs took the NFL by storm when he led the league with 11 interceptions and also had 21 pass breakups. The interception numbers dipped in 2022, but he still had three to go along with 14 pass breakups. DaRon Bland was a steal for the Dallas Cowboys. He led the league with nine interceptions last year and set the NFL single-season record for pick-sixes in a season with five.

The Mike Zimmer Effect

While having both of these players on the field at the same time is tantalizing enough, it becomes even more exciting when you look at the history of Mike Zimmer. After Dan Quinn left to coach the Commanders, Zimmer took over as the defensive coordinator. When he coached the Minnesota Vikings, his defense in 2019 and 2020 were in the top ten in takeaways.

This means Zimmer will coach up the Dallas Cowboys’ defense to generate turnovers. Pair this mindset with the skills of Diggs and Bland and you have a recipe for a lot of opportunities of turnovers. Opposing offenses will have to think twice with both of these players on the field at the same time.

Other Candidates For Top Duo

By the end of the 2024 season, we may be talking about a couple of other duos to be at the top of the list. There are two that are worth mentioning, in my opinion. Seattle has Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon, who have shown promise, and now they have former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald as their head coach. The Chicago Bears also have budding superstars in Tyrique Stevenson and Jaylon Johnson. The Dallas Cowboys duo could have a run for their money at the end of the year for this title.

The Dallas Cowboys need their defense to create chaos for opposing offenses. There are some questions on the offensive side of the ball. If the defense can give the offense some short fields, the team could be atop the NFC East yet again in 2024.
