The Dallas Cowboys have many star players who need new contracts. Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, and star receiver CeeDee Lamb are all in line for massive extensions. The one many are watching is Lamb. Many star receivers have gotten extensions over the offseason, including AJ Brown and Amon-Ra St. Brown. While there is often impatience with these contract talks, Lamb is okay with waiting for one crucial reason.
Dallas Cowboys CeeDee Lamb Okay With Waiting For Contract
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler made an appearance on SportsCenter and talked about why CeeDee Lamb isn’t sweating a new contract just yet. He revealed Lamb is “okay with that because he’s likely waiting on Justin Jefferson in Minnesota.” Jefferson is also in line for a massive extension. Many feel that these two receivers are on the same level, so Lamb wants to use the number Jefferson gets as a negotiating tactic.
There is likely a pride element here as well. Players love to be able to say they are the top-paid player at their position in the league. That title usually goes to the person who signs last. CeeDee Lamb will be patient with the Dallas Cowboys to try and take the title of the top-paid wide receiver. It is estimated his new contract will be worth well over $30 million per year.
Will Jerry Jones Shell Out The Money?
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has historically been stingy with giving out contracts. It makes people nervous about the CeeDee Lamb situation. Jones is often under the impression that players will take a pay cut to play for the Cowboys. The star on the helmet doesn’t have the power it once did. Players will go where the money is. If Jones decides to be stingy with the finances, he might lose some of his star players.
The interesting part of this situation is it isn’t just one player who needs a massive new contract. All three of the players in line for a new contract have an argument to be the highest paid player at their position. It seems likely that at least one of these players will not be back after this season. Paying all of them top dollar will be a challenge given the salary cap restraints.
Who Will They Prioritize?
CeeDee Lamb seems to be the focus. The player who seems to be on the outside looking in is Dak Prescott. The Dallas Cowboys seem to be okay with the former fourth-round pick hitting free agency next year. Prescott himself doesn’t seem very committed to the idea of staying in Dallas, even though he is publicly saying all the right things. As always, this team will be fascinating to watch this year on and off the field.
